Cambodia plans river festival

Cambodia river festival
From Threeland Travel Blog's January
Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism plans to organise an annual river festival along the Mekong and Tonle Sap to attract tourists and raise awareness for environmental protection.

Phnom Penh Post quoted Minister of Tourism Thong Khon, last Friday saying: “The concept of a River festival… will strengthen our range of tourism services,” the minister said.

The first river festival will take place this year in Kratie province, the home of the Mekong’s freshwater dolphins, to support nearby eco-tourism sites and create awareness and help to save the endangered species.

However, the exact date of the festival has not been decided and preparations are still in an early stage.
Mekong Heritage owner, Som Sun, commented that the ministry’s initiative was welcomed by the private sector, but it should also include measures to strengthen the quality of tourism.

The model for the new festival will be the Sea Festival that was held in late 2011 in Preah Sihanouk province.

However, according to Thong Khon the river festival will be on a smaller scale initially.
