A project to upgrade Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport has been completed in time to welcome delegates who will attend the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit 5 to 6 November.

Vientiane Times reported, Wednesday, that state officials including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Thongloun Sisoulith; Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sommad Pholsena; and Minister of Finance, Phouphet Khamphounvong attended a ceremony at the airport to hand over the completed project 9 October.

The Lao Civil Aviation Department reported that the project was completed five months ahead of schedule.

The upgrade of the airport included an expansion of the parking apron to enable it to accommodate up to 25 large to medium-sized aircraft. In total, about 40 aircraft can now park at the airport.

Capacity and safety standards at the airport have also been improved.

The airport improvement project was funded by a low-interest loan from China of US$37.8 million. China’s CAMCE Engineering Company carried out some of the upgrade work at the end of last year, which improved safety aspects.

The project also improved drainage, roads and fences around the airport. Roads leading to the airport were paved and the electrical system replaced. The ASEM Summit is possibly the most important conference to be held in Laos, with 51 top government delegations from Europe and Asia expected to attend the meeting.
