Ho Chi Minh City Airport Expands

Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense has agreed to hand over 7.63 hectares of land to the Ministry of Transport to expand Tan Son Nhat International Airport and fast track efforts to reduce traffic congestion.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam director, Lai Xuan Thanh, the Ho Chi Minh City-based Tan Son Nhat Airport is currently overloaded.

“To serve 25 million passengers a year the airport needs 65 to 70 aircraft parking spots, while at present there are only 42,” he said.

The military confirmed it will donate 7.63 hectares of land to build 21 more parking spots to resolve the issue.

Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport was projected to handle 13 million passengers a year by 2015, but it has already exceeded 20 million.

The country forecasts a substantial increase in tourism over the next five years with the objective of turning its two main airports in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City into the preferred gateways to the Mekong Region.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the largest international airport in terms of area (800 ha or 1,977 acres compared with 650 ha or 1,606 acres of Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport.

It can handle 25 million passengers a year, compared to Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport that has a capacity of 8 million passengers and Danang 6 million passengers.

It handled in 17,538,000 passengers in 2012, accounting for 46.6% of Vietnam’s air passenger traffic.

SriLankan Extends Network To Vietnam

Expanding a long-standing partnership with Malaysia Airlines, SriLankan Airlines said it has extended its network in the Australasian Region adding seven new codeshare destinations in Australia, Vietnam and Malaysia.

To cater to growing demand between Australia and Sri Lanka, SriLankan Airlines will provide daily services to Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth via Kuala Lumpur.  Daily connections to Sydney and Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur already exist. With this addition SriLankan will provide code share services to five major cities in Australia. 

Additionally, Saigon and Hanoi in Vietnam and the islands of Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia have also been added as codeshare destinations via Kuala Lumpur.

“SriLankan is consistently looking at improving air connectivity between Sri Lanka and the Austral-Asia Region, which in effect will increase the number of visitors to Sri Lanka.  These new code- share destinations will further enhance our service to this fast growing region which according to official figures, had the highest growth of tourist traffic of 25.3 percent in 2013,” said SriLankan’s Head of Commercial Operations Mohamed Fazeel.

Vietnam preserves ethnic minorities via tourism projects

To strengthen Vietnam’s tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will speed up projects that help to preserve and develop ethnic minority culture.

Deputy Minister Huynh Vinh Ai told local media that the ministry plans to build a set of cultural development indicators for ethnic minority groups by 2020.

According to the plan, it will create an inventory of ethnic minority cultural heritage, support cultural development of at least 16 ethnic minority groups and repair 300 relics.

This year, it hopes to upgrade grassroots culture and sports institutions, while raising the profile of ‘Cultural Family’ and the ‘Cultural Village’ concepts.

Ethnic minority festivals have been organised in line with the party’s guidelines and state laws.

Last year, the ministry successfully organised the Vietnam Ethnic Minority Cultural Day 19 April and implemented three projects to preserve villages, hamlets and communes linked to ethnic minority groups.

It also built entertainment sites for children in remote, mountainous and island areas in Lai Chau, Dak Nong, Lao Cai, Quang Nam and Dien Bien.

New services to Mekong Region by AirAsia

AirAsia will increase flights to Yangon and Siem Reap later this month to strengthen its Mekong Region network.

The airline will add flights on its most popular routes; Bangkok (Don Mueang)-Yangon to 28 flights weekly starting 24 January and Bangkok (Don Mueang)-Siem Reap to 14 flights weekly starting 27 January.

Thai AirAsia CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, said the Mekong Region is important for the airline, which has enjoyed sustained high passenger growth.

Currently, AirAsia flies to six destinations in the region– Yangon, Mandalay, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. It also wants to fly to Vientiane, capital of Laos but the aviation policy tends to protects the national airline and full-service airlines flying to Vientiane and Luang Prabang, although THAI Smile is now serving Luang Prabang with four weekly flights.

New service to Laos by Vietnam Airlines

Vietnam national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, has opened a new service linking Vinh with Vientiane, the Laos capital, 12 January.

The airline said the service will offer four flights a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, using a 70-seat ATR72 aircraft.

Flights will depart from Vinh airport at 08:40 and from Vientiane airport in Laos at 10:40 (local time), with an estimated flying time just one hour.

Currently, the airline offers 93 international routes to 29 international and 21 domestic destinations.

According to tourism data, around 160,000 to180,000 people travel by road annually between Vietnam’s north central region and the Lao capital, passing through Nam Can (Nghe An), Cau Treo (Ha Tinh), and Na Meo (Thanh Hoa) border checkpoints.

The airline believes there is potential to capture this market and encourage more trade between the two cities.

There are three airlines flying to Vinh: Air Mekong (from Buon Ma Thuot, Ho Chi Minh City, Pleiku); Jetstar Pacific Airlines (from Buon Ma Thuot); and Vietnam Airlines (from Danang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City).

Myamar To Upgrade Muse Checkpoint

Myanmar will upgrade the existing Muse border checkpoint with China's Ruli Township to full international status.

Myanmar Minister of Immigration and Population, U Khin Yi, told Xinhua media, Wednesday, that the project should be completed within two to three months.

 “Foreign visitors holding valid passports and visa will be allowed to enter and exit Myanmar through the Muse gate, or exist through other points such as Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports.”

Today, visitors crossing the border at Muse must enter and exit at the same point.

On 28 August, Myanmar opened fully four checkpoints on the Myanmar-Thai border, namely Tachileik- Mae Sai, Myawaddy-Mae Sot, Tiki-Sunarong and Kawthoung-Ranong. Travelers can continue their journey to other destinations and it gives them the choice to exit through another checkpoint than the one they used to enter the country.

Myanmar has 16 border checkpoints with neighboring countries, but most of them offer limited access.

In 2012, tourist arrivals reached 1.02 million, an increase of 200,000 compared with 2011’s 820,000 due to the significant changes in Myanmar during the year.

Myanmar targets 2 million in 2013 and up to 3 million in 2014.

Myanmar authorities have also granted pre-arranged visa-on-arrival for visitors from 48 countries. It requires pre-approval from authorities. Once the traveller has confirmation that the visa on arrival has been approved they take a flight to Yangon and have the visa stamped into their passport on arrival.

However, airlines are very reluctant to transport visitors who claim to have a visa on arrival approved. They argue that supporting evidence that a visa has been approved and will be issued on arrival is not clear cut.

Phu Bai International Airport to Reopen in September 2013

Come September 2013, travelers to Vietnam’s former imperial city can once again touchdown and take off from the Phu Bai International Airport outside of Hue.

Vietnam’s transport authorities have green-lighted the airport for an early re-opening on 20 September 2013 – two months ahead of schedule.

The airport closed its doors on 20 March for runway repairs and upgrades, estimated between 500 and 600 billion Vietnam Dong.

Located 15 kilometers from the city centre, Phu Bai Airport is the main gateway to Hue, Vietnam’s ancient capital and the seat of power during the reign of the Nguyen Dynasty.

 Hue’s well-preserved citadels, tombs and pagodas have been recognized by UNESCO and are among the country’s top cultural attractions.

“Restoring direct access to Hue is a crucial step in enticing visitors and boosting the city’s profile,” said Phan Trong Minh, general manager at the five-star La Residence Hotel & Spa. “Now that logistical issues are out of the way, Hue can reclaim its place as one of Vietnam’s most alluring -- and accessible -- destinations.”

Vietnam Airlines is expected to resume operations to Hue with three daily return flights from Ho Chi Minh, and two daily return flights from Hanoi.

The improvements on the Phu Bai International Airport are part of the government’s plans to develop Hue and Vietnam’s central coast as key tourism destinations. Six months were spent upgrading the airport’s runway to allow it to receive larger aircraft. Once operational, the airport will be able to accommodate five million passengers per year.

Mutual visa-free between China and Thailand in September

According to “Thai World Journal”, negotiations have been undertaken between Thailand and China to introduce mutual visa-free policy in September this year.

The report pointed out that Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra highly welcomed this mutual visa-free policy between Thailand and China, hoping to attract five million Chinese tourists every year. She also indicated that related departments in Thailand should further intensify the activities of sister cities with Chinese counterparts to promote trading and investing.

Representatives of Thai-Chinese Culture and Economy Association had met with Yingluck recently, reporting current progress in promoting and developing cultural and economic cooperation with China. They said that related departments from two countries have already exchanged views on introducing mutual visa-free policy and further details were currently under discussion. This initiative was affirmed and approved by the Prime Minister, who spoke highly of this policy in creating enormous opportunities for both countries.

Once the mutual visa-free policy is implemented, there will be more Chinese tourists visiting Thailand. According to statistics, there are approximately 2 million Chinese travelling to Thailand each year at present, the number of which will increase by 3 to 4 million with the help of the new policy.

This new service effective August 1st, 2013 will complement the night flight currently in operation, on the high demand Chennai-Singapore route.

This second service at noon offers guests a convenient flight out of Chennai providing seamless connections at Singapore to Australia, New Zealand and to Pacific destinations beyond, through Jet Airways code share and interline partners, and vice versa. AirAsia To Grow India Joint Venture

Asia’s largest budget carrier AirAsia outlined plans to grow its Indian joint venture, including by adding 10 planes a year and focusing on flying new routes.

AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes said more than 50 staffs; including pilots and engineers have been recruited for the new no-frills airline, which plans to start operations in India later this year.

Fernandes said the new airline plans to add 10 Airbus A320s a year to its fleet, which will focus on routes in southern India, rather than Mumbai and New Delhi, before expanding elsewhere in the country.

“India’s aviation has not grown. There are lots of routes which have not been done and lots of airports are under used,” Fernandes told reporters in Mumbai. “We will give the lowest possible fares,” he added.

Malaysia-based AirAsia won approval from India’s foreign investment panel in March to set up the airline in a joint venture with the giant Tata group and entrepreneur Arun Bhatia’s Telstra Tradeplace.

The new venture will be the first by a foreign airline since India relaxed foreign investment rules in September allowing overseas carriers to take up to a 49% stake in domestic firms.

AirAsia will own 49%, Tata group 30% and Telstra 21%.

Fernandes said making the new airline a success would be “challenging” but he was determined to persevere.

Low-cost carriers already dominate Indian skies with a near 65% market share.

India’s aviation sector, once vaunted as a symbol of the nation’s economic vibrancy, has seen its fortunes fade in the face of multiple problems including aggressive fare rivalry, a slowing economy, rundown infrastructure and high airport charges.

Last week, AirAsia terminated its joint venture with Japan’s All Nippon Airways as business slumped amid management clashes.

Fernandes on Monday called it a “bad partnership” but said he was open to looking for a new alliance.

Fernandes, a former record industry executive, took over insolvent AirAsia in 2001 and turned it into one of the aviation sector’s biggest success stories.

Advantages of Japan visa-free for Thais

Kasikorn Research Centre says Japan visa exemption for Thais will encourage outbound travel to reach around 300,000 trips this year up around 50% on last year’s trends.

Japan confirmed that the new visa-free rule would be effective, 1 July, giving Thai visitors a stay of up to 15 days in the country. For longer stays visitors will need to apply for a visa at the Japanese embassy in Bangkok. The visa-free stay is not extendable.

The bank noted that Japan’s tourism has made a quick recovery in the aftermath of the great East Japan earthquake disaster of March 2011, and through the introduction of visa-free entry, travel to the country should continue to expand.

The centre said the Japanese government intends to increase international tourist arrivals to 18 million by 2016 and 25 million by 2020, focusing on ASEAN markets including Thailand.

Outbound travel from Thailand performs well below par when compared to Singapore and Malaysia. Thais face considerable hassle to obtain visas, while the low value of the Thai baht compared with most currencies in the past made overseas travel expensive.

Japan will give visa-free entry to both Thai and Malaysian tourists. The government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe approved the scheme, 11 June, although he did not elaborate at the time when the new measure would take effect. He suggested it would be introduced ahead of the summer season. A 1 July launch has now been officially confirmed by the Japanese government.

Other factors that attract foreign visitors to Japan are the diverse tourism products along with numerous breathtaking natural attractions, fine weather, exotic food and a mix of traditional and high tech lifestyles. The bank noted that Japan should welcome 10 million visitors this year, up 20% year-on -year.

Outbound travel from Thailand is growing mainly because of the rapid rise in the baht against the yen since the fourth quarter of 2012. Japan is viewed as a top shopping destination.

Although the baht is expected to weaken substantially in the second half of this year a visa-free policy when combined with creative packaging by Thai travel agents should maintain a steady moderate growth.

The bank estimated Thai travelers will spend around Bt12 billion on trips to Japan this year.

THE MGM Grand Ho Tram, Vietnam’s inaugural large-scale integrated resort situated in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, is scheduled to open its doors in 1Q2013.

A joint project between MGM Resorts International and Asian Coast Development (Canada) (ACDL), the MGM Grand Ho Tram will be the first component of the US$4.2 billion multi-site Ho Tram Strip resort complex, developed by ACDL and slated to be the largest tourism complex in the country.

ACDL will own and finance the MGM Grand Ho Tram, while MGM Resorts International will provide development assistance, brand equity and manage the five-star integrated resort.

Once ready, the first phase of the five-star MGM Grand Ho Tram will offer 541 guestrooms, a conference centre, a gaming area comprising 90 live table games, 500 electronic games and VIP facilities, and a variety of recreational, F&B and spa facilities.

The second phase of MGM Grand Ho Tram will incorporate another tower with 559 guestrooms, and an additional 500 electronic games.

Mekong Tours to get 2 new tourism ships

The Saigon Shipyard in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7 saw the launch of two newly-built deluxe tourism ships named Mekong Prestige and Cruiseco Adventurer.

The 68m-long ships, designed and supervised by the Dai Duong Phang Co. Ltd., are equipped with 32 luxury cabins capable of carrying 64 tourists.

The shipbuilder said the high-quality boats are designed with optimized fuel-consumption, noise-reduction and high-speed engines.

The ships are scheduled to begin taking tourists on river tours along the Mekong River crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia this October, the shipbuilder said.

In related news, a hydrofoil traveling from HCMC to the coastal city of Vung Tau Wednesday frightened its passengers after the vessel was flooded by water flowing through a broken glass window.

Fortunately the hydrofoil managed to dock at a nearby harbor, and there were no casualties.
