Seaplanes Serving Halong Sightseeing

Seaplanes could be recruited to add a new dimension to Halong Bay’s attraction options according to the province’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The department’s director, Ha Quang Long, said the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam’s (CAAV) was mulling over the idea of seaplanes that could be used to offer sightseeing trips over Halong and Bai Tu Long bays. They would take off from a spot close to where tourist boats anchor and have the flexibility of landing on the sea close to scenic spots in the bay if required.

“We think it is a great idea to use seaplanes for the development of tourism in Quang Ninh,” the director added.

The bays have more than 250 km of coastline and attract thousands of tourists annually drawn by the natural beauty of the World Heritage site.

Before the project can fly, it will require approval from the  government and possibly some changes to some aviation regulations to ensure security or safety regulations are not compromised when a seaplane is used for commercial passenger travel.

CAAV deputy director, Dinh Viet Thang, admitted seaplanes would be a new kind of tourism service for Vietnam.  They are relatively popular in the US and Canada where most of the small seaplanes are privately owned and used for recreational purposes, or as transport to holiday homes built on islands or next to remote  rivers and lakes.

Technically, the project will not use a seaplane, but what is correctly termed an amphibious aircraft that can use both conventional runways and water.

In ASEAN seaplanes are commonly used by governments and military for rescue or reconnaissance. They are fitted with floats and some have retractable landing gear for use on conventional runways.

An experiment in the use of amphibious aircraft commercially in Thailand failed first in Pattaya with a small airline called Yellow Birds and later in Phuket under different name Tropical Air. The venture used two Grummen G111 Albatross.

Thailand’s Civil Aviation Department was reluctant to issue an operating license for the aircraft claiming the technology was out-dated. There were also security considerations.

If the Vietnam plan is approved, amphibious aircraft could be operating commercially by late 2014, Halong Bay. Initially, Hai Au Company will import two planes, but the company would need to ensure there were enough pilots trained to operate the craft that require a different certification.

The company is most likely to use Cessna Grand Caravan 208B EX aircraft with a flight crew of two and seating for 12 passengers, that officials say could be used on both conventional and water runways.

The Grand Caravan was introduced in 1994 and with the upgrade to the EX model in 2012 the manufacturer says the Grand Caravan EX can be “modified for amphibious missions with floats provided by the US firm Wipaire Inc.”.

Actually Vietnam has its own seaplane, the A41 Factory VNS-41, that has been in service since 2005. It was the first amphibious microlight aircraft made in Vietnam built by the A41 Factory (officially Aircraft Repairing Company A-41) under the Air Force and Air Defense Department (Ministry of Defense) based on the Russian Che-22 “Korvet”.

It can carry two or three passengers with a flight range of four hours at a maximum height of 3,000 metres. It requires 200 to 300 metres of space to take off on water and just 50 to 70 metres on land.

The VNS-41 is used by the forestry department, but will also be marketed for sport, travel and commercial applications in the future.

Halong Bay officials gave no further details on the estimated cost of the sightseeing flights, length and scenic routes. Travel firms would need some time to factor the flights into their 2014 tour programmes and the company would need to negotiate commission and sales terms with the trade to make it a success in international markets.

During January to September this year, tourist arrivals to Quang Ninh province reached more than 6 million, a year-on-year rise of 10% including more than 1.8 million foreign tourists, up 20%, with over 2.9 million tourists staying overnight, up 24%.

Greater Mekong Subregion Single-visa Plan Steps Forward

The reality of a single-visa for visitors to the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) took a small step towards reality with a forum of public and private sector representatives from the countries concerned vowing to push their governments to speed up implementing the proposal.

 

Comprising Thailand, China (specifically Yunnan Province and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region), Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, the GMS single-visa proposal is expected to see a significant boost in tourism between member countries, and is a prelude to a wider Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations.) plan to include tourists from an additional six non-member countries; Japan, China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand, on a similarly styled single visa.

Though no Asean member has yet adopted the broader plan, Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Board, said his agency will raise the Asean single-visa issue at a session of the Committee on Economic Cooperation with neighbouring countries later this month.

While it is unlikely that all six nations comprising the GMS will be in a position to implement the single-visa plan concurrently, Chiang Rai Chamber of Commerce has suggested those that were could go ahead first, acting as trail blazers on the advanced implementation of the scheme.

Highway R3 connecting Kunming, Laos and Thailand has been completed in preparation of the implementation of the GMS one-visa proposal, while the Chinese government is paying half the cost of constructing a fourth bridge across the Mekong River, between Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai Province and Huay Xai in Lao, which will be completed next year.

Tourist arrivals by land are poised to soar once more immigration facilities can be set up, especially for Chinese visitors, with the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimating China will be the world’s fourth largest source of outbound tourists by 2020, accounting for 100 million visitors.

UNWTO said East Asian arrivals in Thailand grew by 11.4 per cent to 4.41 million last year, with the number of Chinese visitors rising by 44 per cent to 1.12 million.

According to Mr. Arkhom, GMS countries understand tourism’s potential and have been improving facilities to attract more visitors to places such as Luang Prabang, Laos, a Unesco World Heritage site, with the city upgrading its airport to accommodate Boeing 737s and improving the highway between Thailand’s Nan Province and Jinghong city in China.

New Flights To Korea By Vietnam Airlines

Vietnam Airlines will add four weekly flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Incheon and five weekly flights on the Hanoi-Busan route starting 28 October.
The airline announced the additional services would serve growing tourist demand for holidays in Vietnam.

The airline will add four more flights on the route Ho Chi Minh City-Incheon route, coded VN406 and VN407 and operating Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Five flights will be added on the Hanoi-Busan route, designated VN429 and operating Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
With the new flights, there will be 11 flights a week on the HCMC – Incheon route and 12 flights a week on the Hanoi-Busan route.
South Korea is one of Vietnam’s main tourism markets. During January to August this year, the country welcomed 504,292 Koreans increasing 10.0% year on year.

Myamar To Upgrade Muse Checkpoint

Myanmar will upgrade the existing Muse border checkpoint with China's Ruli Township to full international status.

Myanmar Minister of Immigration and Population, U Khin Yi, told Xinhua media, Wednesday, that the project should be completed within two to three months.

 “Foreign visitors holding valid passports and visa will be allowed to enter and exit Myanmar through the Muse gate, or exist through other points such as Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports.”

Today, visitors crossing the border at Muse must enter and exit at the same point.

On 28 August, Myanmar opened fully four checkpoints on the Myanmar-Thai border, namely Tachileik- Mae Sai, Myawaddy-Mae Sot, Tiki-Sunarong and Kawthoung-Ranong. Travelers can continue their journey to other destinations and it gives them the choice to exit through another checkpoint than the one they used to enter the country.

Myanmar has 16 border checkpoints with neighboring countries, but most of them offer limited access.

In 2012, tourist arrivals reached 1.02 million, an increase of 200,000 compared with 2011’s 820,000 due to the significant changes in Myanmar during the year.

Myanmar targets 2 million in 2013 and up to 3 million in 2014.

Myanmar authorities have also granted pre-arranged visa-on-arrival for visitors from 48 countries. It requires pre-approval from authorities. Once the traveller has confirmation that the visa on arrival has been approved they take a flight to Yangon and have the visa stamped into their passport on arrival.

However, airlines are very reluctant to transport visitors who claim to have a visa on arrival approved. They argue that supporting evidence that a visa has been approved and will be issued on arrival is not clear cut.

Ao Dai Museum To Be Opened In Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam’s emblematic Ao Dai, a long and elegant tunic wore by Female, will soon have its own dedicated museum in Ho Chi Minh City thanks to Vietnamese designer Si Hoang.

Vietnam’s first ao dai (women’s traditional tunic) museum will open next November in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 9. The institution will be the first of its kind in Vietnam and has been created as a private initiative. The museum’s founder is the well-known ao dai designer Si Hoang, who turned his suburban house into a museum. Surrounded by a garden, the new museum is aimed at domestic and foreign tourists and students keen to learn about Vietnamese dress culture. It will feature 500 dresses dating back to 1930.

The collection includes some dresses were by personalities such as an Ao Dai belonging before to Ton Nu Thi Ninh, who is former ambassador of Vietnam to the EU and former vice-chairwoman of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee. The dress was worn by Ninh, her mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law. The collection also includes sets of ao dai owned by Nguyen Thi Dinh, Vietnam’s first female major general to serve in the Vietnam People's Army, former deputy president Nguyen Thi Binh, and famous senior artist Cai luong Kim Cuong and Bay Nam.

The museum also preserves a rich archive of 3,000 pictures despicting ao-dai and related accessories.  According to an interview of Si Hoang to local newspapers, the project took ten years to be developed and requested an investment of a million US dollars to shape the collection and open the museum. 

Hoang’s Long Thuan Garden House  has a lotus pond, traditional Vietnamese wooden house, and camping space for students and tourists, sprawling over an area of 20,000 square meters and is located at 206/19/30 Long Thuan Street, District 9.

Park Hyatt Saigon major renovation work valued business partners and friends

The Park Hyatt Saigon is under major renovation work which will be carried out at the beginning of 2014.

The Park Hyatt Saigon will close for a short period of time from February 16, 2014 – April 2, 2014 and reopen to the public on April 3rd for arriving guests. During this closure most of the intense demolition and restoration work will take place. When the hotel reopens and with most works complete in the public areas, refurbishment will continue in the guest rooms until November 2014.

Vietnam Tourism with 22% growth

Vietnam National Administration of Tourism estimates the country welcomed 676,719 international travelers in August representing an increase of 22.0% over the same month last year.

Thailand’s outbound trips to Vietnam ranked seventh with 22,862 up 16.1% from 19,695 trips last year.

China led the field with 190,358 trips improving 58.0% from 120,514 followed by South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the United States.

Neighboring Cambodia was in sixth place supplying 28,593 trips, up 16.2% from 24,613 trips during the same month last year.

All of the country’s top markets are in the Asia/Pacific region with the exception of the US and France (10th).

The bulk of arrivals in August (525,993) passed through Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

For January to August, international tourist arrivals reached 4,875,447 visits growing 7.9% over the same period last year.

VNAT updated its data on its website, late last week, sourced from the government statistics office.

Bangkok Airways Adds More Flights

Bangkok Airways will add more flights on domestic and international routes to meet an increase in tourist traffic to Thailand.

Flights will increase from Bangkok on three domestic routes to Lampang, Krabi and Phuket as well as one international route to Yangon.

Using ATR72s, the flight to Lampang will increase from two to three daily starting 27 October. PG207 will depart Bangkok at 1220 and arrive in Lampang at 1350, while the return flight, PG208, will depart Lampang at 1420 and arrive in Bangkok at 1550.

Also using the ATR72, the airline will add one more flight on its Bangkok-Krabi route to three daily effective 1 December. PG267 will depart Bangkok at 1320 and arrive in Krabi at 1440, while the return flight, PG268, will depart Krabi at 1525 and arrive in Bangkok at 1650.

The smaller aircraft allows the airline to offer higher daily frequency and that adds convenience for passengers who want to have a wider choice of departure times.

The Bangkok – Phuket service will increase from seven to eight daily flights starting from 1 December and using the larger Airbus 320.

PG283 will depart Bangkok at 0910 and arrive in Phuket at 1035, while the return flight, PG284, will depart Phuket at 1130 and arrive in Bangkok at 1255.

On the Bangkok-Yangon route, the airline will increase from three to four daily flights using a mix of Airbus 320s and ATR72s starting 27 October.

The additional flight, PG707, will depart Bangkok at 1340 and arrive in Yangon at 1430, while the return flight, PG708, will depart Yangon at 1520 and arrive in Bangkok at 1715. Myanmar time is 30 minutes behind Thailand time.

Currently, the airline operates flights to nine domestic and 12 international routes.

Phu Bai International Airport to Reopen in September 2013

Come September 2013, travelers to Vietnam’s former imperial city can once again touchdown and take off from the Phu Bai International Airport outside of Hue.

Vietnam’s transport authorities have green-lighted the airport for an early re-opening on 20 September 2013 – two months ahead of schedule.

The airport closed its doors on 20 March for runway repairs and upgrades, estimated between 500 and 600 billion Vietnam Dong.

Located 15 kilometers from the city centre, Phu Bai Airport is the main gateway to Hue, Vietnam’s ancient capital and the seat of power during the reign of the Nguyen Dynasty.

 Hue’s well-preserved citadels, tombs and pagodas have been recognized by UNESCO and are among the country’s top cultural attractions.

“Restoring direct access to Hue is a crucial step in enticing visitors and boosting the city’s profile,” said Phan Trong Minh, general manager at the five-star La Residence Hotel & Spa. “Now that logistical issues are out of the way, Hue can reclaim its place as one of Vietnam’s most alluring -- and accessible -- destinations.”

Vietnam Airlines is expected to resume operations to Hue with three daily return flights from Ho Chi Minh, and two daily return flights from Hanoi.

The improvements on the Phu Bai International Airport are part of the government’s plans to develop Hue and Vietnam’s central coast as key tourism destinations. Six months were spent upgrading the airport’s runway to allow it to receive larger aircraft. Once operational, the airport will be able to accommodate five million passengers per year.

Easier Access to Myanmar

Myanmar’s Ministry of Information says the country will allow visitors to cross the border at Tachilek, Myawady and Kawthaung from points in Thailand without having to return through the same checkpoint.

According to local media report, it will encourage more foreign visitors to use land checkpoints by allowing them the freedom to enter and exit at different checkpoints.

Geographical restrictions are still in place and travellers have to be aware there are provinces in the country that are still off-limits. However, around 80% of the country has now open to tourism.

The ministry said: “Visitors can go anywhere except where there are security concerns and depart from any exit point recognised by the government.”

The Mae Sai-Tachilek checkpoint has the most potential for international visitors, who are touring North Thailand and want to continue their Mekong Region holiday in Myanmar. They will be able to use Chiang Rai as the gateway to travel to Mandalay and Bagan.

Mae Sai is around 80 km north of Chiang Rai and visitors are allowed to cross the border, but they must return to the same point. To ensure this, officials at Tachilek hold on to passports until the traveller returned usually the same day or at the most two days later. All that is about to change.

The provision should come into force later this year, but travellers should double check at the time they get their visa from an embassy or consulate. It will still require travellers to have a valid visa for Myanmar. The so-called visa-on-arrival is really a pre-arranged visa approved in advance that is activated at a border checkpoint. There are clear differences between pre-arranged and visa-on-arrival. One of them is the need to provide details and a letter of invitation from an organisation in Myanmar to allow the country’s immigration to authorise a visa that is then stamped in the passport at the specified checkpoint of entry.

According to the bilateral agreement between Myanmar and Thailand for border crossing, the official entrance and exits are Tachilek-Mae Sai, Myawady-Mae Sot and Kawthaung-Ranong.

Department Head of Immigration Administration and National Registration of Myawady district, Aung Win Thein, said: “We expect the tourism industry will show good signs of improvement once the new measure is introduced.”

It is also very likely that the country will allow 14 days visa free entry for ASEAN citizens by 2015, when the ASEAN Economic Community comes into play. Once free trade principles are introduced it would be very difficult for Myanmar to justify not giving ASEAN member nation citizens the privilege of visa free entry.

The country aims to attract 1.8 million foreign tourists by year end. The government projects 7.5 million tourists by 2020.

Tourism in Myanmar has showed a positive sign since 2011. Last year, 1.06 million tourists visited the country, an increase of around 30%. The country has about 30,000 hotel rooms. Another 10,000 more rooms will be ready by the end of this year across the country, although the main concentration of new rooms will be in Yangon initially to serve business travelers.

New Air route between Europe & India by Jet Airways

Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, has entered into code share agreements with premium European carriers Air France and KLM, open for sales as of today, for travel effective June 19, 2013.

The code share agreement enables Air France to place its marketing code (AF) on Jet Airways’ domestic flights to three major Indian cities beyond Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai. Customers travelling from Europe to India on Air France flights will now be able to connect seamlessly with one ticket to Chennai via Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai, and to Kolkata, Hyderabad via Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Likewise, KLM will place its marketing code (KL) on Jet Airways’ domestic flights to four major cities in India beyond Delhi, allowing guests travelling from Europe to India to connect seamlessly to Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai via Delhi.

Furthermore, members of Jet Airways’ JetPrivilege and Air France- KLM’s Flying Blue frequent flyer programs have a full fledged network-wide accrual and redemption partnership in place for many years. With the code share in place, members will now have the opportunity to earn status miles/points when travelling on the respective code share flights.

The code share arrangements will allow our guests the convenience of enhanced connectivity from across Air France and KLM’s networks via their European gateways in Paris and Amsterdam to key destinations throughout India."
