Vietnam National Administration of Tourism will propose more visa exemptions to the authorities for visitors from certain markets in North America, Europe, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia, while extending the visa-free duration for other markets to attract more foreign travelers to Vietnam.
The proposal was forwarded to VNAT after a meeting between representatives of local tourism and trade agencies, tour operators, transport companies, big hotels and the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham) in Hanoi, 10 July.
At the meeting, experts said visa exemptions were limited and needed to be widened to include more countries to boost tourism.
The meeting noted that even the visa-on-arrival facility was complicated and required travelers to complete some advance paperwork to ensure it worked properly.
It is also likely that Vietnam will increase the visa-free stay from 15 to 30 days for citizens from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Russia, Japan and South Korea.
VNAT has also urged the government to streamline visa-on-arrival procedures and introduce electronic visas.
Similar changes were also suggested by the Tourism Working Group under the Vietnam Business Forum at a mid-term dialogue between the government and the business community in Hanoi last month.
Vietnam already allows nationals of 17 countries to enter the country without a visa. The length of stay differs.
Citizens of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Kyrgyzstan get a visa-free stay of up to 30 days. Citizens of the Philippines get 21 days. Citizens of Brunei and Myanmar get 14 days.
Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Japan, and South Korea get 15 days.
All travelers can visit Phu Quoc for 30 days without a visa, but they must, either enter through the island’s seaport, or through its airport after transiting through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City’s international airports.

The Trang An Tourism Complex in Vietnam’s northern Ninh Binh province has been declared a World Culture and Nature Heritage site by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
It is the first heritage site in the country that combines both natural and cultural aspects required by UNESCO.
The recognition was announced at a meeting of the Heritage Committee of the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in Doha, Qatar.
The Trang An Tourism Complex consists of three adjacent areas. These consist of the cultural area, the ancient capital of Hoa Lu (under three shortlived dynasties – Dinh, early Le and early Ly between 968 and 1009).
The natural aspects are the limestone peaks, streams and caves at Trang An, Tam Coc and Bich Dong and Hoa Lu.
Then there is the primeval forest. The whole complex covers 4,000 ha – and a buffer zone of beautiful green paddy fields.
Situated on the southern shore of the Red River Delta, Trang An is a spectacular landscape of limestone karst peaks permeated with valleys, some of which are submerged, and surrounded by steep, almost vertical cliffs.
Exploration of some of the highest altitude caves that are dotted across the landscape has revealed archaeological traces of human activity dating back almost 30,000 years. They illustrate the occupation of these mountains by hunter-gatherers and how they adapted to climatic and environmental changes.
Vietnam now has eight World Heritage sites: Halong Bay (Quang Ninh province); Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park (Quang Binh province); Hue Complex of Monuments (Thua Thien Hue province); Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary (Quang Nam province); Thang Long Imperial Citadel (Hanoi) and Ho Citadel (Thanh Hoa province).
The newly recognised Trang An complex meets UNESCO’s three criteria for possessing cultural, aesthetic and geographical values.

The city authority says around 250 cycles will be available
for rent for just US$0.19 per hour that will be launched soon in Hoan Kiem
district, Hanoi.
Hanoi is among the five major cities in Vietnam that will
introduce bike rentals.
The four other cities are Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong,
Danang and Can Tho.
Ministry of Transport’s Transport Department head, Khuat
Viet Hung, told local media that over the last two years, the number of
cyclists in Hanoi had increased.
“In the downtown areas, such as the old quarter in Hanoi,
where the traffic flow is dense, bicycles are very appropriate,” he said.
Initially, the bikes will probably be rented by local
residents for short commutes in the Old Quarter, but the long-term objective is
to attract visitors to use rental cycles.
Dong Xuan Joint Stock Company general director, Do Xuan
Thuy, who is the developer of the bike rental programme in Hanoi, said bicycles
are suitable for the Hanoi.
“This type of vehicle will help solve environmental problems
and traffic congestion in the city and rentals are cheap.”
The company will offer 250 bicycles in Hoan Kiem district
and paid for by electronic cards. They will be parked at bus stops or tourist
attractions, especially the Old Quarter.
“Within three years, the number of people using bicycles
will be very significant and will also appeal to tourists,” he said.
This year, the city targets 15 million domestic tourists and
2.8 million international visitors. By 2020, the city targeted to reach 3.2
million foreign arrivals and 20 million local tourists.
Last year, there were 2.58 million international tourists
and 14 million domestic tourists visited Hanoi.

Vietnam Being Among Top Long-haul Holiday Destinations

The Travel Edit 2014 by Kuoni looks at the changing habits
of British travelers based on sales data over the last three years across a
number of holiday categories including wallet-friendly destinations, overall
bestsellers, honeymoons and sightseeing experiences.
The report puts Vietnam at the top of the rising
star destinations – the country has jumped nine places in the company’s
best-selling destination list from 23 in 2011 to 14 in 2013.
And early indications are that Vietnam ,
Mexico and Cuba are
already becoming three of the most requested long-haul destinations for 2014,
set to rise even further up the best-selling holiday list by the end of this
year.
Derek Jones, Kuoni managing director, said: “Vietnam has
seen huge developments in its tourism industry over the last few years with
investment in a wide choice of hotels and sightseeing options.
“Access to the country has become much easier since Vietnam
Airlines launched direct flights from the UK in 2011 and we’re now seeing the
impact of that - we expect to see it move into our top ten this year for the
first time.”
But there’s no change to the number one bestselling
destination for Kuoni for the ninth year running - the Maldives .
“Its mix of super-luxury resorts set on
Robinson-Crusoe-style desert islands, as well as excellent activity options
such as diving, sailing and visits to local villages means it continues its
appeal not just for couples of all ages - but also increasingly for families.”
An early indication of the bestselling destinations for the
year ahead is also revealed based on advance sales until the end of January

The administration director, Lai Xuan Thanh, told local
media that electric vehicles were a better option than taxis or motorbikes.
“Passenger demand for transfers between terminals is now
quite high… we need a solution,” he added.
Regulations for the use of vehicles within the airport
complex need to be revised. There was just one terminal up until the end of
December so there was no requirement for vehicles, other than technical support
for aircraft, gate transfers and supplies.
Even the use of environmentally friendly electric cars will
require a change in regulations.
Currently, there are 36 domestic and international airlines
operating from and to the Noi
Bai International
Airport . Last year, there
were around 90,000 flights, carrying nearly 13 million passengers and 332,000
tonnes of cargo.
Last December, the expanded Terminal T1 officially started
operations. It has a capacity to serve 6 million passengers a year. Terminal
T2, which has the capacity to serve 15 million passengers, will be fully
operational by the end of this year.

tourists last year, of which 750,000 were foreigners. Only 45,000 tourists from
Thailand
visited the central city and other destinations in the central region.
Khon Kaen is a major commercial
town on the main highway and rail line linking Bangkok
and Vientiane the capital of Laos . At the heart of the northeast region it is
