Russian tourists to Vietnam increase sharply

Russian Tourist
Russian Tourists
From Threeland Travel's Blog - August 2012
Russia is among countries having the highest numbers of tourists to Vietnam in the first half of this year, according to Voice of Russia (VOR).

VOR reported that the country has jumped to 11th from 25th position over the past three years with more than 87,000 Russians visiting Vietnam in the first five months of 2012. In June alone, more than 2,500 Russian came to Nha Trang, VOR said.

It cited various reasons, such as tension in the Middle East and Fukushima nuclear plant breakdown which have discouraged Russians going to their favourable destinations in Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia and Japan.

That’s why Vietnam has now become an attractive destination for Russian tourists who prefer tours a reasonable price but in safety.

Kemerovo has recently opened a new air route to Cam Ranh Airport, VOR noted. The Primorye region’s governor is scheduled to discuss with the Russian Minister of Transport the possibility of opening a direct air route between Vladivostock and Hanoi. A Russian village has been built at Mui Ne resort for Russian tourists, VOR added.

An international conference on “Building a border of peace and friendship between Vietnam and Laos” was held on late June in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.

The conference was co-chaired by President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front’s (VFF) Central Committee Huynh Dam and President of the Lao Front for National Construction (LFNC) Phandouangchit Vongsa.

The conference, which is among activities to celebrate the 2012 Vietnam-Laos Year of Friendship and Solidarity, 50 years of the establishment of the Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties and 35 years of the signing of the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty between the two countries, focused on reviewing the cooperation results after 2 years of implementing the emulation agreement of VFF Central Committee and LFNC.

Participants at the conference heard reports on the activities of the two fronts, which underlined the active communication campaigns to popularise policies and laws of the two governments and parties, as well as border treaties and regulations related to the protection of national sovereignty and building a border of peace and friendship.

The reports also highlighted the coordination between the two fronts and the local governments of provinces along the border, in strengthening the solidarity and mutual support between people in the border area, and promoting the socio-economic and cultural development in border areas.

During 2012-2014 the two sides will continue to concentrate on raising awareness of the people, particularly along the border, on promoting peace and friendship and developing traditional solidarity, special relations and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam-Laos, Laos-Vietnam.

The two sides will also focus on building residential areas with political stability and solidarity among ethnics groups in the localities, while stepping up socio-economic development in boundary localities, ensuring national defense and security along the shared border.

On the occasion, the LFNC presented the Lao State’s Friendship Order to the Fatherland Fronts of ten provinces of Vietnam that share the border with Laos.

Banh trang nuong, a new street bite in Saigon

Banh trang nuong
Banh trang nuong - Photo by thunguyen_209
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012
In the late afternoons, when it is too early for the dinner, I often stop by the banh trang nuong (grilled dry pancake) stall near the Notre Dame Cathedral for a light downtown snack.

Besides the Notre Dame location on Han Tuyen Street, banh trang nuong can also be found on Nguyen Hue Street in District 1 and several other locations in the city. Banh trang nuong is one of the newest street snacks in town. It was originally created in Dalat.

“Over the last year, this kind of snack has become more popular in Ho Chi Minh City, but I have been cooking it for around two years,” said the multi-tasking cook who I interviewed while she prepared a batch of banh trang nuong in front of the city's trademark church.

She spread a dry pancake over hot charcoals in a pot and quickly spreads on the other ingredients. At the same time, she spoke with me, and looked around to see if the police were coming or not. Pavement food stalls are banned in the Notre Dame Cathedral area.

Banh trang nuong reveals how open Dalat cooking is to foreign food culture. Dalat was founded by the French during colonial times. As a result, French flavors such as butter, baguette bread, and jam have been used in local cuisine for decades.

The price for one banh trang nuong is only VND 7,000, the same as a mere motorbike parking fee at fancy establishments in District 1. In this city, it is a super cheap snack but the taste is also super interesting, and it’s fun to eat.

Banh trang nuong includes tiny dry shrimp, a quail egg, ground pork, and chili paste all linked by a key French culinary staple: butter. All of these ingredients are very thinly spread over a round dry pancake, which is then folded in half when the cake is almost completely grilled.

It takes only a minute to grill a single banh trang nuong, perfect for food stall owners needing to escape the police.

Normally a tiny food stall with a pot of hot charcoal and boxes of ingredients is looked after by a family, typically a wife and husband or a mother and her children. One will be in charge of cooking and the others keep look-out.

They have to spot the police from far enough away to be able to evade them. When the police approach, each member of the group will pack up a small part of the food stall and run in a different direction.

Although banh trang nuong is a new dish, it reflects traditional Vietnamese cooking concepts that promote contrast in texture and color. There are different tastes and textures such as crunchy (dry pancake), spicy (chili sauce), fatty (butter), something salty and dry (tiny dried shrimp), and the freshness of shallots and quail eggs.

Banh trang nuong also includes a variety of colors: green (shallot), yellow (butter and quail egg), red (chili paste) and sand color (pancake).

When my cake was almost done, the cook turned it to grill the other side evenly. The cake was very hot, and the cook reminded me to be careful. Her husband gave me a piece of paper so I could hold the hot cake with my fingers.

Banh trang nuong has a nice fragrance of baked butter mixed with other fresh and dry ingredients. This taste is perfect for the late afternoon, when the temperature cools -- it's especially good after the rain. I like sitting under a tamarind tree and enjoying the cake while watching the sunset over Notre Dame Cathedral and April 30th Park.

Around me, most other diners are groups of young people, sitting on newspapers splayed out on the sidewalk. It is a special place to enjoy a relaxing moment in such a lively city.

Emirates to open Moscow – Dubai – HCMC flight

Emirates Airlines
Emirates Airline (Photo by ToastyKen)
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012

The United Arab Emirates’ airline Emirates has decided to launch its new direct air route linking Moscow – Dubai – Ho Chi Minh City now until September 30.

According to the announcement on July 13, the Emirates Moscow Office informed that the route has been open to meet the demand of any travelers to visit Vietnam’s beautiful scenery such as Ha Long Bay, the former imperial city of Hue, Hoi An ancient city, Ho Chi Minh City formerly known as the Far East Pearl and other beaches in the country.

For a round trip costing 21,000 rupees (nearly US$650), including taxes and other airport charges, passengers fly directly from Moscow to the Vietnamese southern metro. The plane will fly direct from Moscow to HCM City and transit in Dubai on the way back where passengers are offered an overnight stay at local hotels and free transport services.

Also, as scheduled, on 2nd December 2012, Emirates will launch the first A380 service to Moscow – one of two daily flights.

Emirates A380 offers Private Suits in First Class, flat-bed seats in Business Class and extra room in Economy Class. All cabins provide customers access to mobile phone onboard, Wi-Fi and more than 1,200 channels of their in-flight entertainment system. First Class and Business Class passengers can relax and socialize with fellow passengers in Onboard Lounge. There are also luxury Shower Spas exclusively for First Class passengers.

The flight with A380 from Moscow to Dubai will start from around RUB 18,000 in Economy Class (approximately US$ 555).

Emirates flights to Moscow arrive at Domodedovo International Airport, 42km southeast of central Moscow. The easiest way of reaching the city centre after Moscow flights is via the AeroExpress train service which links the airport with Paveletsky Rail Terminal in downtown Moscow. Alternatively, passengers arriving from flights to Moscow can take the frequent coach service which connects with Moscow’s Metro system at Domodedovskaya and is ideal for onward travel, or one of the city’s many taxis. You must register your stay with the authorities within seven days of arrival; your hotel may do this on your behalf but it pays to check.

Myanmar to build new airport

Yangon International Airport
Yangon International Airport
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012
Myanmar is looking for investors to develop a new airport near Bago that ultimately lead to the phase out of Yangon Airport as the main gateway.

AFP reported this month, arrivals at Yangon International Airport are expected to surge to around 3 million in 2012, a 22% increase on last year. That would put the airport over its 2.7 million threshold, according to the Department of Civil Aviation. “We need a new airport because of increasing traffic at the current airport… is quite difficult to handle,” said DCA assistant director, Nwe Ni Win Kyaw.

The planned Hanthawaddy airport will be on a site nine times bigger than the current facility and located about 80 km from downtown Yangon, the country’s main commercial centre. The site was identified by the fminitary junta three years ago as the replacement for Yangon’s airport, which has limited space to expand.

Work is expected to start in June 2013, with the airport operational by 2016. Veiled from the world for decades under a brutal military junta, the Southeast Asian nation has seen an influx of tourists and business travellers in recent months, attracted by a swathe of changes under a new reformist regime.

Arrivals in Yangon — including both domestic and international passengers — surged to 1.53 million in the first half of 2012, more than the number that passed through the airport in the whole of 2008.

The city’s current airport, which sees the vast majority of Myanmar’s overseas air traffic, is also slated for expansion, allowing it to cope with the 5.4 million visitors expected in 2015.

“But 5.4 million would be the highest limit we could deal with,” said Nwe Ni Win Kyaw. Myanmar has two other international airports, in Mandalay and in the capital Naypyidaw, but they are not fully operational.

The new airport plan is part of a larger scheme by the DCA to ultimately privatise all the country’s airports.

There are currently 14 international and six domestic airlines flying from Yangon airport and six new foreign carriers are in discussion with the DCA about operating in the country.

The splendor Phou Khao Khouay

Locals and travelers can enjoy a relaxing time with a weekend trip to one of the jewels of Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area in Borikhamxay province, Laos.

Tad Xay waterfall
Tad Xay waterfall
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012

Tad Xay waterfall

This site starts with a seven tier drop of about 30 meters where water flows as if going down a massive flight of steps. This waterfall is called Tad Xay and flows from the crystal clear waters of the Houay Xay stream. From there the water curves to the left through a picturesque small valley just before running 800 meters downstream over a 50 meters drop into a breathtaking forested gorge, Pha Xay.

Tad Xay and Pha Xay are considered to be the most spectacular waterfalls in the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area. People come here to picnic, to see the orchids, to go for a swim at the foot of the falls, and take a boat ride. On a fine day you can see white orchids set against the verdant backdrop of the Pa Khamkhiew (‘the green forest’).

The site has been open to guests since 2003 and is now popular with visitors who like adventure. October to April is the best time to visit Tad Xay and Pha Xay before the waters become too turbulent. Park authorities in collaboration with donor agencies have been promoting Tad Xay as part of a guided camping site and home stay with the residents of nearby Hat Khai village.

Tourists are also provided a chance to explore the area with local villagers who have been trained as guides. The trips are aimed at promoting ecotourism and conservation, and maintaining an environmental balance. Some people can be seen canoeing upstream to the most navigable point. Then they trek north for two hours to reach the falls. Boats are available at the villages of Hat Khai and Houay Leuk.

City dwellers should take time off one weekend to come here to absorb the smell of nature and get to know the area on foot. So come and immerse yourself in this calming place and discover a special experience on the doorstep of Vientiane.

Visitors can reach Houay Xay directly from Vientiane starting with a left turn shortly before entering Thabok (at Km 90 on Road 13 south). Next go towards Houay Leuk village (5 Km). Then follow the road signs that say “National Park”. After crossing the metal bridge over the Nam Leuk turn right after 1 kilometer. A further 2 kilometers on, you’ll pass another small village, Hat Khai, which is the “gateway” to the park.

Amazing Floating River Villages in Siem Reap

Kampung Phluk – An exclusive world
Cambodia Tours, Cambodia Travel - Kampung Phluk village
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012
Whilst visiting Angkor Wat, visitors cannot skip through Kampung Phluk because of its unique on-water world. Kampung Phluk is practically located at the edge of the Tonle Sap Lake and completely surrounded by mangrove forests, where every year the water level rises and falls depending on the season.

Tourists will absolutely be awestruck when it comes to the site of sequential houses constructed on bamboo stilts, sitting 10 meters above the water. The atmosphere is absorbed in a mixture of typical salty smell, coming from fish, crocodile and pig farms nearby. The village has all the cultural and social sites for its residents - a temple, a stupa to keep the ashes of the departed, a monastery, and schools. There is no western hospital, and the people still prefer their traditional medicine for minor illnesses.

During the wet season, the lake overflows and floods the area surrounding it. That is the main reason why local houses follow the special structure. The Cambodian villagers adapt to the yearly change by adjusting the height of their houses depending on the water level.

During the dry season, the water level falls so drastically that visitor can actually walk on land. The villagers often take advantage of the available dry space to dry their shrimp. After the shrimp are dried, they are seasoned and later packaged to be sold.

As the boat slowly moves further into the village, tourists will see the peaceful Cambodian on-water life. People are busy washing clothes, trading, cleaning newly caught fish, while some are relaxing in the house safe from the hot sun. At last, after spending some time in the village, do not leave Kampung Phluk without taking a look at the great Tonle Sap Lake, which is just a few minutes boat ride away.

Kampong Khleang – An unspoiled river land

Kampong Khleang
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012

Kampong Khleang is located on the northern lake-edge about 55 km east of Siem Reap town, more remote and less tourist than Kampong Pluk. Visitors to Kampong Khleang during the dry season are universally awestruck by the forest of stilted houses rising up to 10 meters in the air. In wet season the waters rise up to one or two meters of the buildings. Like Kompong Pluk, Kompong Khleang is a permanent community within the flood plain of the Lake, with an economy based in fishing and surrounded by flooded forest. But Kompong Khleang is significantly larger with nearly 10 times the population of Kompong Pluk, making it the largest community on the Lake.

The area can be reached by charter boat from the Chong Khneas dock takes about two and a half hours or by a combination of road to Domdek on Route 6 takes one and a half hour reach to dock and then meet a boatman drive another one hour to the village, the best method depending on the time of year. During the dry season, boats cannot get all of the way to the main villages.

Chong Kneas – A well-constructed floating village

Chong Kneas
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012

Chong Kneas is a floating village at the edge of the Tonle Sap Lake that is more popular than Kampung Phluk and Kampong Khleang. It is one of the major attractions in Siem Reap, just about 20 – 30 minutes from the province’s center. The route to this village is lined with attractive paddy fields, stilted houses and the Phnom Krom hill – which has an ancient temple at the top. As entering the village, the first thing that impresses visitors will be rows of tourist boats docked.

There is a seemingly-most famous Cambodian school in this village. That students go to school on boat makes hilarious scenery. The school even has a separate floating basketball court and definitely, visitors cannot imagine how it was able to be built. The protective rails on the sides of the court restrict the ball and players inside. Besides, do not miss out on the catfish farm – probably the ‘highlight’ of the Chong Kneas visit. Visitors have the chance to feed them. There is also a crocodile farm with about ten crocodile right next to the fish farm. A fantastic view of the Tonle Sap Lake and the floating village can be seen from the second or third storey of the farm.

The floating river villages are within the top must-see places whilst visiting Cambodia. If you want to take an all-inclusive trip to enjoy the on-water life, please visit Threeland Travel Indochina and email us at help@threeland.com. We will get back to any enquiry as soon as possible.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises announced three new ships in Asia for 2013. In partnership with Pandaw in Vietnam and Cambodia along the Mekong River, and Century River Cruises in China along the Yangtze River, Uniworld will offer their clients the best cruising experiences these regions have to offer.

In January 2012, Uniworld launched the River Saigon along the Mekong, and due to the increasing popularity of Vietnam and Cambodia, they will launch another new ship, River Orchid, in this region in 2013. These ships are handcrafted in French colonial style to furnish their guests with a more authentic type of cruising experience along the Mekong. The intimate scale of the ships, which boast just 30 staterooms and carry no more than 60 guests, assures more personalized service. “The demand for Vietnam and Cambodia has exceeded our expectations. We quickly sold out all of our departures in 2012, and so it made sense for us to add an additional ship along the Mekong,” states Guy Young, President of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises.

For those wishing to travel to China, they’ll be treated to a five-star luxury experience onboard the new Century Legend or Century Paragon. The Century Paragon and Legend will offer Uniworld guests an unmatched level of comfort, luxury, and relaxation never before experienced on the Yangtze. The many five-star features these vessels will offer include an exclusive executive deck and a huge indoor pool/spa area. While cruising on either of these new ships in China, guests will stay in Uniworld Signature Suites, and will be treated to a host of exclusive VIP benefits available only to them.

Onshore Uniworld guests can expect the same five-star experience. Uniworld has arranged for their guests to stay in superior, centrally located five-star hotels throughout Asia all, of which offer luxurious accommodations, modern-day comforts, and impeccable hospitality.

“Uniworld wants to continue to offer our clients a well diversified portfolio of product offerings throughout the world, and we want to deliver to our guests the very best accommodations and amenities these regions have to offer,” adds Young.  “We have also included many exclusive VIP benefits that are only available to our guests,” furthers Young.
