Exploring Laos Cuisine


If you once visited Laos, you will not forget the taste of its traditional dishes. Laos’s food is hot, spicy and in low land, it is usually used with a special kind of rice called khao niaw. Khao niaw is glutinous sticky rice, often served in a small basket, and eaten with the hand by taking a small amount of rice and rolling it into a neat small ball before dipping it into the food. Sticky rice is steamed cook and place in a specially made bamboo basket, which remains Laos’s basic staple and becomes unique to Lao cuisine.

You might feel happy trying foe – a kind of rice noodles – Laos’s standard breakfast. It is usually served in a broth with vegetables and meats based on your taste. If there is something you cannot resist at first sight, it is definitely lap – the most distinctive dish in Laos. It is an original spicy salad made from minced beef, pork, duck, fish or chicken, mixed with fish sauce, small shallots, mint leaves, lime juice, roasted ground rice and lots and lots of chillies. Laos’s people, from the north to the south, consider it to be a delicious and healthy dish.

Another famous dish in Laos is tum mak hung. It is also a spicy salad made from shredded green papaya mixed with garlic, lime juice, fish sauce, sometimes tomatoes, palm sugar, land crab or dried shrimp and, of course, chillies by the handful, then often served with sticky rice, fried chicken and raw vegetables.
