Amadeus Air Traffic Travel Intelligence analysis revealed that global air travel improved from 2011 to 2012, with Asia recording the highest growth rate at 9 percent year-on-year.
Seven out of the top ten world’s busiest air travel routes were found in Asia and 75 percent of all Asian routes were served by three or more airlines.
Jeju-Seoul in South Korea remains the world’s busiest air route, while Sapporo-Tokyo has overtaken Rio de Janeiro-Sao Paulo to become the second-busiest air passage.
Beijing-Shanghai rose four places year-on-year to become the fourth most popular air travel route.
Low-cost carrier penetration in Europe grew 38 percent year-on-year, followed by North America with 30 percent.
Traffic volume from Asia and Europe through the Middle East rose by approximately 20 percent from 2011 to 2012, indicating the popularity of this region as an aviation hub.
“The rapid pace of change and increasing competitiveness of the global airline industry, as evidenced by this data, means airlines and the wider travel industry increasingly need to base operational decision-making on data insights and analytics, in order to identify opportunities and risks as they emerge,” Amadeus head of travel intelligence Pascal Clement said.
