Increase Flights To Nay Pyi Taw

Thai AirAsia launched its daily Bangkok-Nay Pyi Taw service, while Bangkok Airways increased its services to daily on the same route.

Officials at Myanmar’s ministry of transport confirmed that Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines have filed for rights to fly to the capital in time for the SEA Games that opens early-December.

“We have received proposals from Singapore and Malaysia Airlines,” Deputy Minister for Transport Zin Yaw told the Union Assembly.

The ministry says it will invite more airlines to land at Nay Pyi Taw, while locally owned FMI and APEX airlines, both want to establish bases at the capital to serve domestic routes.

Nay Pyi Taw International Airport opened 19 December 2011, but international services have only been approved earlier this year.

During a six-month promotional period, airport authorities cut landing fees in half and provided tax-free passenger services.

Special Air Fare From Thai AirAsia

Thai AirAsia sells discounted fares for travel on selected routes September through to December.

Fares are around 50% off standard website quotes. The promotion is valid for bookings until 8 September for travelling 17 September to 31 December this year.

Dragon flies to Danang

Dragonair announced late last week the launch date of a new service to Danang, its second destination in Vietnam after Hanoi.

The carrier will kick off a three weekly service, 28 March. The flight schedule will vary depending on the day.

Dragonair currently flies 10 times a week between Hong Kong and Hanoi, while sister airline, Cathay Pacific Airways, operates 16 flights weekly between Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City.

Danang authorities have been in talks with various airlines to promote more international flights to the city to support the growth of tourism to match an increase in hotels and entertainment options.

Currently, regional airlines operate flights to Danang are AirAsia (Kuala Lumpur); Asia Airlines (Seoul); China Eastern Airlines (Kunming); Far Eastern Air Transport (Taipei); Korean Air (Seoul); Lao Airlines (Pakse, Savannakhet, Vientiane) and Silk Air (Siem Reap, Singapore).

THAI Smile and Thai AirAsia have both shown an interest in flying to Danang, but no decision has been made on possible launch dates.

Thai AirAsia ramps up Myanmar connections

Thai AirAsia is planning to mount regular flights from Bangkok to Nay Pyi Taw and Bagan before the start of the 2013 South-east Asian Games in Myanmar.

Speaking at a promotional event ahead of the launch of four-weekly Bangkok-Mandalay services (TTG Asia e-Daily, August 15, 2012) and the addition of a third Bangkok-Yangon daily flight on October 4, Thai AirAsia CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, emphasised that facilities at nearly all of the country’s airports would have to be upgraded before international airlines could launch more routes.

“We have a plan to (fly to) Nay Pyi Taw, but the facilities have to be upgraded… I am sure the government is doing it and by next year we should be able to fly to Nay Pyi Taw,” he said.

“For flights to Bagan, we will look at maybe middle or the end of next year. I think we need to upgrade the (airport) facilities, such as ground handling services.” Tassapon added that the Bangkok-Mandalay flights operated by Thai AirAsia would likely increase to a daily frequency within six months.

“A lot of people would like to come and see Mandalay, especially tourists from Europe. We have a lot of (European) tourists coming to Thailand and many of them want to visit Myanmar,” he said.

Daily charter services to Naypyitaw to be opened

A Burmese chartered flight service will start three flights per day between Rangoon and Naypyitaw in September, local media reported on Friday.

The private company, First Myanmar Investment (FMI) Air Charter Service, will acquire two aircraft, a 40-seat ATR-42 and 16-seat Beechcraft, from state-run domestic Myanma Airways (MA), Biweekly Eleven News reported this week.

The chartered flights will begin on Sept. 9, the report said.

Meanwhile, local media said two more new private airlines – Golden Myanmar Airlines and Taninthayi Airlines – are planning to provide domestic and international flights from Mandalay. No details about destinations or types of aircraft were provided.

The airlines are now discussing details with civil aviation authorities.

In addition, to the 64-year-old state-operated domestic Myanma Airways (MA), there are five private-run domestic airlines in Burma, namely Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways, Air Bagan, Asian Wings and Air Kanbawza.

Besides Myanmar Airways International (MAI) flying internationally as Myanmar's national flag carrier, there are 13 foreign airlines flying to Rangoon including Air China, China Southern Airline, China Eastern Airlines, Thai Airways International, Indian Airlines, Air Asia, Taiwan region's China airlines, Silk Air, Malaysian Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Jetstar Asia, Thai Air Asia and Vietnam Airlines.

Meanwhile, five new international airlines will start flights to Rangoon in October including Taiwan's EVA Air, South Korea's KAL, Japan's All Nippon Airline (ANA), China's Hong Kong-based Dragon Airline and Qatar Airways.
