Establish new small aircraft base at Mandalay international airport.

State-owned airline Myanma Airways will establish a small aircraft base at Mandalay’s international airport to expand its domestic commuter flights to secondary destinations.

According to the Eleven Myanmar news report, the Mandalay hub will be a base for airline services to Nyaung Oo, Heho, Banmaw, Myitkyina and Lashio, using Beech Craft and Grand Caravan aircraft.

The airline also intends to fly sightseeing trips from the airport for tourists staying in Mandalay.

The media quoted unnamed official as saying that MA has submitted the proposal to Department of Civil Avaition.

The sightseeing flights will cover upstream and downstream trips along the Ayeyawady River, Began-Nyaung Oo-Poppa-Moneywa, Pyin Oo Lwin-Gote Htake and Pintaya-Inle-Pyadalin cave (Nywa Ngan).

MA bought four Beech Craft and a Cessna Grand Caravan.

Myanma Airways is the sole national flag carrier and state-owned airline of Myanmar, based in Yangon. In the past it prospered mainly on royalties it received from other airlines it partnered with. There was also a rule that ensured the state airline held shares in all other airlines flying in the country.

It operates scheduled services to all major domestic destinations from its main Yangon International Airport base. Most tour operators avoid using the airline due to its poor safety record in the past.

Free Shuttle Bus Transfers to/from Mandalay Airport By AirAsia

AirAsia has launched a free shuttle bus service for its passengers in Mandalay, offering daily transfers between Mandalay Airport and downtown Mandalay.

The 45-kilometer journey is free of charge for AirAsia passengers.

 To celebrate this value-added service, the airline is offering promotional fares on its daily flights from Bangkok to Mandalay, starting from THB 1,290 per way (inclusive of airport tax).

The promotion can be booked until 16 June 2013 for travel between 16 August and 15 December 2013. Terms and conditions apply.

The shuttles busses are scheduled to depart twice a day from Mandalay Airport to Downtown, starting at 12:45, followed by another departure at 13:00. The 45-60 minute journey will drop off passengers at 79th street, (between 26 and 27).

From downtown Mandalay to the Mandalay Airport, passengers will be picked up at the same location (79th street, between 26 and 27) at 09:00. The second bus will depart for Mandalay Airport at 09:15.

In order to enjoy the free shuttle bus service, passengers must show their AirAsia boarding pass or a print-out of their confirmed booking.

Currently, AirAsia offers three daily flights between Bangkok and Yangon, and one daily flight between Bangkok and Mandalay.

 In addition to Thailand, the low-cost airline also connects Yangon to Kuala Lumpur via one daily flight.

 AirAsia also recently announced the launch of new direct daily flights between Bangkok and Nay Pyi Taw, scheduled to commence in October 2013.

Limitation to bikes from crossing teak bridge

Myanmar Ministry of Culture will prohibit motorbikes and cycles from crossing U Bein Bridge, a historic footbridge and a prominent tourist attraction recognized as the world’s longest teakwood bridge.

Ministry of Culture deputy minister, Daw Sandar Khin, said it is assisting the local government to preserve the 1.2km-long wooden footbridge that was built in the mid 1800’s by the town mayor, U Bein.

It links Amarapura and Taungthaman villages and is still used today by villagers. Government officials fear it could collapse if measures are not taken to relieve traffic.

Motorbikes cause the most damage to the structure, but there are also cases of vandalism. During the annual water festival in April, the bridge is packed with people far more than it was designed to hold safely.

Even though cycles are also included in the ban, the deputy minister said residents could still push them across.

The Ministry of Culture has continually worked on restoring the bridge since 1990 with major repairs undertaken in 2005 to 2006 and during 2008 to 2009.

According to the report, the ministry’s department of archaeology ensures that repair works are undertaken using the original construction materials, however; earlier repairs used concrete, rather than teak wood.

The bridge is located at 25 km from the Mandalay International Airport.

Amarapura has several interesting attractions including Bagaya Kyaung, a wooden monastery founded by King Mindon; Amarapura Palace ruins; Maha Gandhayon Kyaung, a modern monastery complex with hundreds of monks and novices and a Chinese temple.
