More International Flights from Phu Quoc by Vietnam Airlines

Vietnam Airlines will open two new routes connecting Phu Quoc International Airport in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang with Singapore and Cambodia’s Siem Reap effective 1 November.

The airline will operate two flights a week using an A321 aircraft on the Phu Quoc – Singapore route and three flights a week using an ATR72 on the Phu Quoc-Siem Reap route.

The new routes should boost Kien Giang province’s attractiveness for investors who are studying the potential of this up-coming destination.

In 2013, Phu Quoc airport served nearly 700,000 passengers, up 39% from the previous year.

For the first half of this year, the airport catered to around 450,000 passengers increasing 34.1%.

Vietnam Airlines, founded in 1956 under the name Vietnam Civil Aviation, became a state enterprise in April 1989. The airline is headquartered in Long Bien district, Hanoi, with hubs at Noi Bai International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

It flies to 52 destinations in 17 countries, excluding codeshared services.

Aviation expansion in Vietnam

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung recently approved a civil aviation strategy that indicates the country will need to increase commercial aircraft registered in the country to 250 by 2030.

According to the plan, it calls for airlines to substantially increase air transport to traditional markets in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and China.

The strategy identifies other key areas for expansion such as South Asia, East Europe and the former Soviet Union.

To succeed it will have to convince local airlines to invest in more aircraft, while the government will need to put in place incentives for airport developers and ensure airport fees are competitive to encourage foreign airlines to add more services to give better connectivity to support economic growth.

The first step is to raise the number of aircraft serving the country to 210 by 2020, almost double the aircraft count today. By 2030 the fleet should reach 250.

To fulfill the set targets, the aviation sector will continue to invest heavily and upgrade infrastructure such as terminals and parking lots to improve the efficiency and enlarge aviation ports.

Priorities will be given to expanding and upgrading international airports such as Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, Cat Bi, Phu Bai, Danang and Cam Ranh and completion of the first phase of Long Thanh international airport.

Moreover, there are plans to turn Chu Lai International airport into a cargo transit centre to serve Southeast Asia and China’s southern region.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast that by 2014 Vietnam would become the world’s third-fastest growing market for international passengers and freight after China and Brazil.

It predicts passenger traffic through the country will reach 34 to 36 million by 2015.

New air service to Singapore by Vietjetair

VietJet Air will launch a daily service from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore starting 23 May.

According to the airline, it will offer 2,520 seats a week to meet a steady increase in travel demand.

The flight from the Tan Son Nhat International airport will depart at 0850 and arrive in Singapore at 1140.

The arrival time in Changi Airport will allow passengers to connect with services to other ASEAN countries particularly Indonesia.

The return flight from the Changi International airport will depart at 1240 and arrive HCMC at 1330. All are local times.

Vietjet Air business development director, Desmond Lin, said the upcoming route will be its second international service after the airline introduced flights to Bangkok last year.

The airline currently operates more than 600 flights a week on 23 domestic and international routes, using a fleet of 11 leased A320s.

The airline has ambitions to fly to more domestic destinations and expand its operations to several regional countries such as Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.

Launched in 2011, the budget carrier recently finalised an order with Airbus to purchase and lease 100 aircraft with a total contract value of US$9.1 billion.

In 2013, it transported more than 4.3 million passengers, accounting for about 26% of the domestic market share.

New plan to attract tourists of Sapa

Sapa District’s People’s Committee in the northern province of Lao Cai plans a culture and entertainment complex in the district to attract more international tourists.

According to the plan, the project will be built on 41 ha of land near Nguyen Chi Thanh Road and Hoang Lien National Park in Sapa district.

It will be divided into three main areas including a central community zone, an entertainment area, souvenir shops, restaurants, guesthouses and cable car terminal to make it more convenient for visitors to reach nearby peaks and viewpoints.

Sapa is the main destination in in Lao Cai province in northwest Vietnam. It is one of the main market towns in a very mountainous region, where several ethnic minority groups such Hmong, Dao (Yao), Giay, Pho Lu, and Tay live.

Thousands of tourists head for Sapa to enjoy the cool weather at an altitude of around 1,500 metres. The nearest train station is at the base of the mountains in Lao Cai town, which is also on the border with China. The rail line links China to Vietnam’s capital Hanoi.

Lao Cai will assume much greater significance as a regional economic and trade hub given its strategic location ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community free trade era, that is due to start in December 2015.
The border town has road, railway and waterway connections and in the future will include air routes. Lao Cai is also located on an economic belt project that will link ASEAN members and China.

But its main appeal is Sapa that nestles in a mountain range overlooking Lao Cai and is best known for its trekking, cool weather and its role as a market town for ethnic minority groups.

The best time to visit Sapa is from February to April and September to November to enjoy spring and autumn weather. It is extremely cold in December and January and guest houses lack heaters in the rooms. Four-star hotels are better equipped to keep their guests warm even to featuring fireplaces in bars or lobbies.

New expansions from Mekong Delta's International Airport

Can Tho city authority says the Mekong Delta province’s Can Tho International Airport will be served by more domestic and international airlines once routes have been approved.

Proposed new routes will help attract investment and promote trade exchange between the Mekong Delta and other Vietnamese and foreign localities.

Three domestic routes will connect Can Tho with Danang, Lam Dong and Khanh Hoa and domestic airlines are expected to pick up traffic rights for the services once the routes are approved.

Four international routes will open up to Thailand’s Bangkok, Cambodia’s Siem Reap and cities in Taiwan and South Korea.

However, the international routes still need to be discussed in depth with relevant ministries and agencies who will meet with representatives from domestic and international airlines to assign landing slots and schedules.

Can Tho International Airport is located in Can Tho in Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The airport was opened 1 January 2011. It was built at a cost of US$150 million and can handle up to 5 million passengers a year.

Can Tho is the fourth largest city in Vietnam, and the largest city in the Mekong Delta.

Last year, the region attracted nearly 24 million tourist arrivals of which 2 million were foreigner. Tourism generated over US$220 million in revenue in 2013 up 11% from 2012.

Electric cars to be used at Noi Bai Aiport

Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport has approved the use of electric cars on a trial basis at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi to transfer passengers between terminals.

The initiative, which was proposed by the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, for passenger and staff transfer between Terminal T1, the expanded Terminal T1 and Terminal T2, when it becomes operational by the end of this year.

The administration director, Lai Xuan Thanh, told local media that electric vehicles were a better option than taxis or motorbikes.

“Passenger demand for transfers between terminals is now quite high… we need a solution,” he added.

Regulations for the use of vehicles within the airport complex need to be revised. There was just one terminal up until the end of December so there was no requirement for vehicles, other than technical support for aircraft, gate transfers and supplies.

Even the use of environmentally friendly electric cars will require a change in regulations.

Currently, there are 36 domestic and international airlines operating from and to the Noi Bai International Airport. Last year, there were around 90,000 flights, carrying nearly 13 million passengers and 332,000 tonnes of cargo.

Last December, the expanded Terminal T1 officially started operations. It has a capacity to serve 6 million passengers a year. Terminal T2, which has the capacity to serve 15 million passengers, will be fully operational by the end of this year.

More Flights to Danang by Dragonair

Dragonair, a Hong Kong-based subsidiary of Cathay Pacific, will add frequency between Danang and Hong Kong from four to six flights starting 30 March and using Airbus A320s.

The airline launched the route last March making Danang the airline’s second destination in Vietnam after Hanoi.
Dragonair said Danang, the gateway point for beach resorts and the heritage coastal village of Hoi An, are popular destinations with visitors from Hong Kong.
Also, Danang is making headway attracting small to medium-sized events from the region particularly corporate meetings and incentives from Hong Kong.

The central region is noted for its UNESCO-recognized World Heritage sites of My Son Sanctuary, Hoi An ancient town, and Hue’s imperial palace complex, as well as many other cultural and historical sites.

Vietnam And Thailand Establish Cooperation

Vietnam’s Danang City and Thailand’s Khon Kaen province recently signed a Letter of Intent to establish cooperation in tourism, education, culture, investment and trade.

The coorperation was inked 16 January to encourage both destinations to improve competitiveness.

Danang, located in the central region of Vietnam, and Khon Kaen in the centre of Northeast Thailand are on the East-West Economic corridor linking Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

They have seen modest trade exchanges in previous years. Their export-import turnover was about US$31.2 million in 2012. Only one company from Thailand has so far invested in Danang and three enterprises have opened representative offices.

Danang University also officially included the Thai language in its curriculum in 2006.

Danang welcomed 3.1 million tourists last year, of which 750,000 were foreigners. Only 45,000 tourists from Thailand visited the central city and other destinations in the central region.

Khon Kaen is a major commercial town on the main highway and rail line linking Bangkok and Vientiane the capital of Laos.  At the heart of the northeast region it is known for its universities, commerce and agricultural trade.

Vietnam preserves ethnic minorities via tourism projects

To strengthen Vietnam’s tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will speed up projects that help to preserve and develop ethnic minority culture.

Deputy Minister Huynh Vinh Ai told local media that the ministry plans to build a set of cultural development indicators for ethnic minority groups by 2020.

According to the plan, it will create an inventory of ethnic minority cultural heritage, support cultural development of at least 16 ethnic minority groups and repair 300 relics.

This year, it hopes to upgrade grassroots culture and sports institutions, while raising the profile of ‘Cultural Family’ and the ‘Cultural Village’ concepts.

Ethnic minority festivals have been organised in line with the party’s guidelines and state laws.

Last year, the ministry successfully organised the Vietnam Ethnic Minority Cultural Day 19 April and implemented three projects to preserve villages, hamlets and communes linked to ethnic minority groups.

It also built entertainment sites for children in remote, mountainous and island areas in Lai Chau, Dak Nong, Lao Cai, Quang Nam and Dien Bien.

ASEAN Considers Single Visa

ASEAN’s may have embarked on a mission to establish a so-called “common visa”, but there is still a considerable distance to cover to make it a reality, according to assessments made during tourism minsters’ press briefing Monday.

It warranted a mention in the minsters’ progress report, outlined at a media briefing, but only to say ministers were “working closely with relevant agencies on the development of a common visa for non-ASEAN nationals and its possible implications on tourism.”

Relevant agencies in this instance are immigration bureaus, national security and police. Ministers admitted privately there are still considerable hurdles to overcome to turn it into a reality.

The subject gains an airing at the annual ATF usually in the minsters’ report card on activities and discussions that confirm it is still on the radar, although not an urgent must-do project before the ASEAN Economic Community kicks in 2015.

On the sidelines of the ministers press briefing, Monday, Indonesia’s minister of tourism and creative economy, Dr Mari Elka Pangestu, said 2014 would see Myanmar sign off on visa free entry for all ASEAN member-country citizens. It is the last of the 10 countries to introduce visa-free travel for the region’s citizens.

“That will be significant progress, we are not sure when Myanmar will complete bilateral agreements on visa-free travel, but we have been assured it will happen before ATF 2015.”

Myanmar has signed bilateral agreements on visa-free travel with Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Philippines and Vietnam. Thailand was supposed to be next, but Thai caretaker prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, postponed her trip to Myanmar last November when she was scheduled to sign off on the agreement.

In addition, it is understood that Myanmar has still to negotiate bilateral agreements on visa-free travel with Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

“Once that process has been completed,” Indonesia’s tourism minister explained, “the next logical step would be to look closely at the Thailand-Cambodia single visa project that is now a pilot project… it could be extended to five of the six Mekong Region countries that all members of ASEAN.”

If that project could be extended smoothly to include all five Mekong Region countries to offer a single visa for non-ASEAN nationalities, the minister believed it would become a sound platform to build an ASEAN-wide common visa.

Tam Dao Provides Free Wi-Fi

Tourists, who visit Tam Dao, 86 km from Hanoi, can enjoy free Wi-Fi access according to the Provincial Department of Information and Communications.

The provine invested around US$700,000 in its free Wi-Fi project in an effort to lure more tourists to the region.

Various destinations in Vietnam are improving Wi-Fi access for visitors believing it is an essential service that will ultimately improve Vietnam’s ability to attract more international tourists.

According to the department, visitors and residents will enjoy free Wi-Fi service until 2019. After that they will have to pay for the service.

“The free Wi-Fi project will help visitors to research information on the region on the spot making it easier to explore attractions and that helps us to draw more foreign tourists,” an official explained.

Due to mountainous terrain, Wi-Fi hotspots have been placed at hotels, or high buildings in the centre of Tam Dao town.

Tam Dao tourist area is located in Tam Duong district, 86 km from Hanoi, covering Ban Thach, Thien Nhi and Phu Nghia mountains.

Vietnam has introduced free Wi-Fi for visitors in Hoi An, Danang, Halong, Hue, Da Lat, Cat Ba and at Saigon Railway Station.

Over the next two years Quang Ninh province will provide more free Wi-Fi at economic and tourist hub cities such as Uong Bi, Cam Pha, Van Don and Mong Cai.
