Hotels on Chaungtha Beach are
luring tourists during the monsoon season by offering discount from 10% to 40%
according to a report in the Myanmar Times Wednesday.
The Chaungtha Hoteliers
Association announced the campaign for June to October to attract business
during the rainy season.
Yangon in the past offered
discounts during the same months, but due to the surge in business travel this
year, hotels are doubling or trebling rates. They are also cancelling contract
rates with overseas tourism suppliers and opting out of contracts that should
come into play for the next winter season.
“Chaungtha Hotelier Association
secretary, U Min Kyaw Oo said: “With this discount, guests can stay two nights
for the price of one.”
The association confirmed that
roads to the beach have been repaired by the Ministry of Construction.
Currently, there are 15 licensed
hotels and four guest houses at Chaungtha Beach. The town is located in the
Ayeyarwady region around 200 km, or a five-hour drive, from Yangon, the
commercial capital of Myanmar.
After Myanmar held elections and
introduced reforms earlier this year, room rates in Yangon skyrocketed by as
much as 300%. Tour operators handling trips to Yangon are cutting overnight
stays in Yangon and some are diverting business to Mandalay or Bagan.
There are 250,000 registered
rooms in Yangon, but 10% of the inventory was being used as offices, clinics or
rented by long-stay expatriates.
Currently, there are around 1,400
rooms under construction in various joint venture hotel projects in Yangon.
