Seaplanes Serving Halong Sightseeing

Seaplanes could be recruited to add a new dimension to Halong Bay’s attraction options according to the province’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The department’s director, Ha Quang Long, said the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam’s (CAAV) was mulling over the idea of seaplanes that could be used to offer sightseeing trips over Halong and Bai Tu Long bays. They would take off from a spot close to where tourist boats anchor and have the flexibility of landing on the sea close to scenic spots in the bay if required.

“We think it is a great idea to use seaplanes for the development of tourism in Quang Ninh,” the director added.

The bays have more than 250 km of coastline and attract thousands of tourists annually drawn by the natural beauty of the World Heritage site.

Before the project can fly, it will require approval from the  government and possibly some changes to some aviation regulations to ensure security or safety regulations are not compromised when a seaplane is used for commercial passenger travel.

CAAV deputy director, Dinh Viet Thang, admitted seaplanes would be a new kind of tourism service for Vietnam.  They are relatively popular in the US and Canada where most of the small seaplanes are privately owned and used for recreational purposes, or as transport to holiday homes built on islands or next to remote  rivers and lakes.

Technically, the project will not use a seaplane, but what is correctly termed an amphibious aircraft that can use both conventional runways and water.

In ASEAN seaplanes are commonly used by governments and military for rescue or reconnaissance. They are fitted with floats and some have retractable landing gear for use on conventional runways.

An experiment in the use of amphibious aircraft commercially in Thailand failed first in Pattaya with a small airline called Yellow Birds and later in Phuket under different name Tropical Air. The venture used two Grummen G111 Albatross.

Thailand’s Civil Aviation Department was reluctant to issue an operating license for the aircraft claiming the technology was out-dated. There were also security considerations.

If the Vietnam plan is approved, amphibious aircraft could be operating commercially by late 2014, Halong Bay. Initially, Hai Au Company will import two planes, but the company would need to ensure there were enough pilots trained to operate the craft that require a different certification.

The company is most likely to use Cessna Grand Caravan 208B EX aircraft with a flight crew of two and seating for 12 passengers, that officials say could be used on both conventional and water runways.

The Grand Caravan was introduced in 1994 and with the upgrade to the EX model in 2012 the manufacturer says the Grand Caravan EX can be “modified for amphibious missions with floats provided by the US firm Wipaire Inc.”.

Actually Vietnam has its own seaplane, the A41 Factory VNS-41, that has been in service since 2005. It was the first amphibious microlight aircraft made in Vietnam built by the A41 Factory (officially Aircraft Repairing Company A-41) under the Air Force and Air Defense Department (Ministry of Defense) based on the Russian Che-22 “Korvet”.

It can carry two or three passengers with a flight range of four hours at a maximum height of 3,000 metres. It requires 200 to 300 metres of space to take off on water and just 50 to 70 metres on land.

The VNS-41 is used by the forestry department, but will also be marketed for sport, travel and commercial applications in the future.

Halong Bay officials gave no further details on the estimated cost of the sightseeing flights, length and scenic routes. Travel firms would need some time to factor the flights into their 2014 tour programmes and the company would need to negotiate commission and sales terms with the trade to make it a success in international markets.

During January to September this year, tourist arrivals to Quang Ninh province reached more than 6 million, a year-on-year rise of 10% including more than 1.8 million foreign tourists, up 20%, with over 2.9 million tourists staying overnight, up 24%.

Yen Tu

From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012
Once visit Quang Ninh, visitors can not skip through the fabulous historical and cultural sites Yen Tu and Dong Trieu – Mao Khe.

Yen Tu is located about 40 km from Ha Long City and 14 km from Uong Bi Town. This cultural and historical site is made up of a system of pagodas, shrines, towers and forests, belonging to the village of Thuong Yen Cong Commune, Uong Bi Town.

Situated within the immense arched mountain range of north-eastern Vietnam, Yen Tu Mountain bears at its peak the Dong (bronze) Pagoda: at an altitude of 1,068 m above sea level. The beauty of Yen Tu consists in the majesty of its mountains mingling with the ancient and solemn quietness of its relics.

Visitors can get to Hoa Yen Pagoda at the altitude of 534 m by the cable car system recently put into operation and will see on this peak two 700-year-old frangipane trees. From there, you will continue walking up stairs to pagodas of minor note lined up along the path leading to Dong Pagoda. There you will feel like walking on clouds. If the weather is agreeable, from this summit you can admire the dramatic landscape of the northeast of Vietnam.

In spring, Yen Tu attracts a large number of tourists going on pilgrimage and sightseeing. Yen Tu festival begins on the 10th day of the first lunar month and lasts until the end of third lunar month.

Yen Tu has really become a Buddhism centre since Emperor Tran Nhan Tong surrendered his throne to establish a Buddhist sect called Thien Truc Lam and became the first progenitor. He ordered building hundreds of constructions, large and small on Yen Tu Mountain for leading a religious life, sermonizing. After his death, his successor, Phap Loa Dong Kien Cuong, the second progenitor of Thien Truc Lam, compiled a set of book “thach that ngon ngu” and ordered the building of 800 pagodas, shrines and towers with thousands of value statues throughout 19 years of religious life. Some famous pagodas are Quynh Lam, Ho Thien.

Passing through to the Le and Nguyen Dynasties, Yen Tu became the focal point of Vietnamese Buddhism, and was often subject to restorations. It is a meeting place of different styles from various historic periods: visible in the many different designs and decorations that ornate its constructions.

Dong Trieu is one of the compulsory stops for local and foreign tourists who come to visit the magnificent site of Ha Long bay, with its population of islands rising from the clear and emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Costa Del Cat Ba – a waking up fishing village

Cat Ba island
Cat Ba island
From Threeland Travel's Blog - October 2012
Cat Ba Island is situated a mere 50 km east of Hai Phong city in the north of Vietnam. The island is part of a chain of 366 islands that lie within the larger area of Ha Long Bay. At over 200km2, it is the largest island in Ha Long Bay. Its human population is concentrated on the southern part of the island, around the town of Cat Ba. The island is easily accessible and matches neighboring Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay for stunning natural beauty. It also offers visitors the added options of relaxation, adventure and cultural exchange. In April 2005, Cat Ba was officially recognized as Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Cat Ba is well-known for its unique terrain and casual island lifestyle. While the vast majority of Ha Long Bay’s islands are uninhabited vertical rocks, Cat Ba has a few fishing villages, as well as a fast-growing town. Since being discovered by Hanoi residents, Cat Ba has turned into a highly popular summer getaway, filling up on weekends and holidays, when prices fluctuate accordingly. The island is now much sought after by both domestic and international visitors as a ready alternative to the city madness and bus tour boredom. Much of Cat Ba Island was declared a national park in 1986 in order to protect the island’s diverse ecosystems and wildlife, including the endangered golden-headed languor, the world’s rarest primate. There are many famous rugged limestone mountains, hot and cold springs, moist tropical forests, mangrove forest, coral reefs as well as deserted beaches. There are also numerous lakes, waterfalls and grottoes in the spectacular limestone hills, the highest of which rises 331m above sea level. A sleepy fishing village just a decade ago, it is now waking up as the Costa Del Cat Ba.

Today, increases in infrastructure on the Island made it easier for tourists to visit the Island. Those upgrades including the building of bigger roads, dams to build harbors and to protect Cat Ba Town from flooding, consistent electricity being brought to the island (which surprisingly happened as late as 1997) instead of having to rely on a generator, and large ferries and barges, able to transport trucks and cars to the Island from the mainland making daily trips to Cat Ba have led to a rapid increase in tourism and development in Cat Ba Town starting in 2001. Since then, the island is commonly used as an overnight hotel stop on tours to Ha Long Bay run by travel agents from Hanoi. A stop on Cat Ba Island has been included in the itinerary of many Ha Long Bay 4-star cruises and a strip of tall, thin, five story budget hotels line the seafront, receiving more than 350,000 visitors a year. Currently, over 105 hotels are listed in Cat Ba Island’s tourist directory pamphlet, from cheap budget hotels to flashier upscale resorts, and construction is underway on many more.

Cat Ba Island has become the adventure-tourism capital of Vietnam, and many of the activities advertised are nature-based. Visitors can take a Ha Long kayaking trip and a luxury travel on a 4-star cruise through Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago, hike through the national park, mountain bike around the Island, spend time on Monkey Island just offshore, explore the Island's many caves, swim on Cat Co 1, 2, or 3 (three sandy beaches a short walk from Cat Ba Town), or even rock climb on the limestone karsts. With its stunning scenery, its association with Ha Long Bay, its proximity to highly populous cities like Haiphong (50 km) and Hanoi (150 km), and even China (many regional visitors come to the Island in the summer, the busy season, to avoid the heat and pollution in the cities), and plenty to do, Cat Ba Island has become a major travel destination for foreign and Vietnamese visitors alike.

Bai Tu Long – an off the beaten tourist track

Bai Tu Long Bay
Bai Tu Long bay
From Threeland Travel's Blog - October 2012
Bai Tu Long is a beautiful bay lying within the area of the gulf of Tonkin, on the northeast of Vietnam. This tourism site is located 60 km from Bai Chay and situated in Ha Long commune, Van Don District, Quang Ninh Province. It comprises a part of Halong’s sea, Cam Pha town and Van Don Island District. It shares the border with Halong Bay on the southwest, with the sea on the east, with Cam Pha town on the west and with Co To island district on the northeast. The bay is a long string of islands which was created when the entire limestone plateau sank below sea level, including hundred of islands and islets, several among which are residence for local people. There are a rich biodiversity with two main ecosystems: a tropical, moist, evergreen rainforest ecosystem; and a marine and coastal ecosystem. It is estimated that there are 391 species of marine creatures, most of which bring about high economic and scientific value.

According to legend, an immense dragon descended to Ha Long Bay (meaning "Descending Dragon") millions years ago, dropping numerous eggs. These eggs hatched forming thousands of rocks and islands. The tail of the dragon extended far to the sea, forming Bach Long Vi (meaning "The Tail of the White Dragon"). As she returned to heaven, she said good bye to her offspring at the Bai Tu Long Bay (means "The dragon parts the offspring").

Bai Tu Long Bay has great potential for developing tourism. Along with Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay is one among the wonderful natural wonders, with beautiful islands and long-white-sandy beaches. Bai Tu Long is well-known not only for its natural beauty, but also for a special tourist attraction – Bai Tu Long eco-tourist site. Bai Tu Long eco-tourist site lies within the area of Van Don Island district. It covers a total area of 100 ha with over 10km coastline. The construction style is the combination of the Asian and Western architecture style with coastal self-contained stilt houses harmoniously lying among the natural scenery. Other notable attractions in Bay Tu Long Bay are Quan Lan Island, Ngoc Vung Island, Van Don Island and the fishing villages at Vung Vieng, Minh Chau Island, Thong Thien Cave, Phat Co Island, and Cua Ong Temple. Van Don Island is one of the main highlights of Bai Tu Long Bay as it’s the first island you come to, the most developed, and is connected to the mainland by bridge. Quan Lan Island is also a popular Bai Tu Long Bay attraction, more laidback than Van Don. The bay is also home to the large must-seen Bai Tu Long National Park. It is one of seven Vietnamese amphibian national parks which has both terrestrial zone and aquatic zone. It represents Vietnam’s sea preservation site, which has attracted a larger number of both domestic and foreign tourists. Visitors can get there by speedboat or by road from Bai Chay Beach.

A trip to Bai Tu Long can be done with minimum 2 nights stay requires. The best way to take advantage of Bai Tu Long Bay is to get on a boat tour/ high speed hydrofoil from Halong Bay, or go from Cai Rong pier on Van Don Island within Bai Tu Long Bay to the more remote islands, or by bussing from Hanoi to Cua Ong pier, from where ferries leave for the archipelago. Some buses also run across the bridge and onto Van Don Island. The trip from Hanoi is straightforward via highway 18 and takes about four hours, while the international airport to the north of the capital at Noi Bai receives flights from all over the region. It is highly recommended for visitors to experience the life of the fisherman in Bai Tu Long by visiting fishing villages and even go fishing with the locals, or enjoy a 4-star cruise through Ha Long and Bai Tu Long on Grayline for 2 days.

Bai Tu Long is still an uncharted bay in Ha Long and promises to be a popular tourist attraction in coming time. By taking trip to this stunning bay, visitors will not only have a chance to get “off the beaten track” but also make the trip unforgettable.
