Phu Quoc Island, one of the world’s top winter destinations!

Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam has been cited among the world’s top winter destinations for 2014 thanks partly to its deep sand beaches and warm waters.

The Vietnamese National Administration of Tourism said Wednesday on its website that the island – known as the Southeast Asian country’s tourism haven – ranked third in a list of 15 recommended destinations for the best winter trips this year released by U.S. magazine National Geographic Traveler’s website, which promotes beautiful landscapes around the world.

“Some of Vietnam’s best beaches are on heart-shaped Phu Quoc Island... Located in the Gulf of Thailand ... Phu Quoc once housed the so-called ‘coconut tree prison’ where prisoners of war were held through 1973,” the site said about the island.

“What’s bringing international travelers and, so far, restrained development to Phu Quoc today are its warm, turquoise waters; secluded, deep sand beaches; and lush, mountainous interior (protected as a national park),” it explained when discussing why foreigners love the island.

Renowned globally as a paradise-like island, Phu Quoc covers 589.23 km2 off the southern province of Kien Giang. Administratively speaking, the island is classified as a district administered by the Kien Giang administration.

Besides giving general information about Phu Quoc, National Geographic Traveler’s website also recommended that travelers visit it from December to March, which is the dry season with ideal average daytime temperatures between 77°F (25°C) and 82°F (28°C).

Other suggestions including accommodation and must-eat food were also cited on the site.

“Pull up a plastic chair and sit under the stars at the bustling Dinh Cau Night Market to try whatever local fishermen hauled in that day,” it said.

National Geographic Traveler ended its description with a fun fact about Phu Quoc that the island is Vietnam’s nuoc mam (fish sauce) capital.

Its signature (and powerfully pungent) sweet-sour Phu Quoc sauce is the essential Vietnamese condiment and, in 2013, became the country’s first product to receive European Union Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.

The Phu Quoc fish sauce production line has been developed for 200 years, and this specialty of Vietnam has become more popular at home and abroad since it is exported to the U.S., EU, and a number of Asian countries.

On February 14 this year, Phu Quoc Island welcomed its first international flight, carrying 290 Russian passengers.

The island’s new airport, which was officially opened in 2012, is capable of handling 2.6 million visitors and expected to serve its development for the next 15 or 20 years, according to Dao Viet Dung, director of Phu Quoc airport.

Air route launched between Phu Quoc and Singapore

 

An air route linking Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island in the southern province of Kien Giang and Singapore was launched at Phu Quoc International Airport on November 2.

To start, Vietnam Airlines will operate flights twice a week using A321 airplanes. It will later adjust the number of flights to market demand and operational effectiveness.

The introduction of Phu Quoc - Singapore flights is expected to serve the travel needs of entrepreneurs and tourists, and popularise the island’s image, thus further promoting trade, investment and tourism.

In operation since December 2012, Phu Quoc International Airport received nearly 700,000 passengers in 2013, a year-on-year increase of 39 percent, with around 37 percent of total tourists being international tourists.

It catered for more than 800,000 people in the first 10 months of 2014, up by 53 percent compared to the previous year, and expects to welcome 1 million passengers for the whole year.

Invested by real estate firm Vingroup, the complex covers more than 300ha and includes a hotel and villa area with 750 rooms, an entertainment centre, and a 27-hole golf course.

It is the biggest project in Kien Giang province and expected to considerably improve high-end tourism services and infrastructure on the island.

More International Flights from Phu Quoc by Vietnam Airlines

Vietnam Airlines will open two new routes connecting Phu Quoc International Airport in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang with Singapore and Cambodia’s Siem Reap effective 1 November.

The airline will operate two flights a week using an A321 aircraft on the Phu Quoc – Singapore route and three flights a week using an ATR72 on the Phu Quoc-Siem Reap route.

The new routes should boost Kien Giang province’s attractiveness for investors who are studying the potential of this up-coming destination.

In 2013, Phu Quoc airport served nearly 700,000 passengers, up 39% from the previous year.

For the first half of this year, the airport catered to around 450,000 passengers increasing 34.1%.

Vietnam Airlines, founded in 1956 under the name Vietnam Civil Aviation, became a state enterprise in April 1989. The airline is headquartered in Long Bien district, Hanoi, with hubs at Noi Bai International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

It flies to 52 destinations in 17 countries, excluding codeshared services.

New Routes in Vietnam by Jetstar

Jetstar Pacific airline will open two new domestic air routes from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang and Phu Quoc starting 15 December.

According to the airline, the new domestic routes will meet growing travel demand between the destinations.

An Airbus A320 will fly the route from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang and Phu Quoc daily.

Jetstar Pacific will purchase an additional two Airbus A320s in early December this year and late January 2014 to cope with increasing numbers of passengers.

The Jetstar Group operates up to 3,000 flights a week to around 64 destinations and carried more than 23 million people in 2013 fiscal year.

Vietnam's Marine Tourism To Be Bloomed

Marine tourism is beginning to make its mark on Vietnam’s tourism performance according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The ministry reported that marine tourism has posted a sales growth rate averaging 23.7% annual, 2000 to 2010 and the trend continues.

The sector should achieve revenue of around US$10 billion by 2020.

To reach the goal, six destinations will be developed to attract marine tourism.

They are: Halong Bay, Tu Long-Cat Ba in the north; Lang Co-Canh Duong; Hoi An-Cu Lao Cham; Nha Trang-Cam Ranh; Phan Thiet-Mui Ne in the central region; and Phu Quoc near the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.

Seaports will be improved, or built, at Halong, Danang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc by 2015.

The long-term plan is to focus on coastal regions in the north (Mong Cai-Ninh Binh) and those in the north-central and the central (Thanh Hoa-Binh Thuan), in the southeast (Ba Ria-Vung Tau-HCMC) and in the southwest (Tien Giang-Ca Mau-Ha Tien).

To support marine tourism, the ministry has suggested to the central government to exempt visas for foreign visitors to popular tourism islands such as Con Dao and Phu Quoc.
