Opened the friendship bridge over the Mekong River!
A bridge linking the Mekong River’s Khong island to mainland Champassak province in Laos was officially opened, earlier this week.
It should help to boost trade and tourism in the far southern corner of Laos, by making it easier to transfer from the large Mekong River island to the rest of the province, without needing to use ferries.
The Lao News Agency reported the 718-metre long bridge, which was largely funded by the Chinese government, will enable inhabitants of the 10 villages on Khong Island (Khong district) to connect with the rest of the province that borders the river bank.
Visitors to the island, which is a popular tourist spot, can transfer by bus rather than using small ferries.
Public Works and Transport Minister, Dr Bounchan Sinthavong, was quoted as saying that Chinese financial support was very important to develop the province’s economy.
“The bridge will make travel to and from the island much easier. It will significantly contribute to greater socio-economic development, trade, investment, and tourism in the southern region.”
Built at a cost of more than USD34.12 million, 95% of the financing was provided by a long-term, low interest loan from China’s Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank). The remaining 5%, amounting to USD1.7 million, was provided by the Lao government. The bridge, which is 11 metres wide, took 34 months to complete.
Champassak is a province in southwestern Laos, and shares borders with Thailand and Cambodia. Freshwater dolphins and the province’s many waterfalls are the main tourist attractions.

Kampot pier is going to be built!
Cambodia’s Kampot province’s City Hall plans to build a passenger pier to bring more coastal tourism business from Thailand and Vietnam.
The Phnom Penh Post quoted Kampot City Hall’s administrative director, Sim Vuthea, as saying that the new USD40 million passenger pier will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The pier will be located on 4 hectares of land between the border of Teuk Chhu district and Kampot City.
The director said: “The construction of the port is likely to start in mid 2015, or by the end of 2015. We are waiting for procedure progress report from the ADB and approval on how soon the project can be put to contract bidding.”
An immigration office will also be built to facilitate travellers.
Kampot’s Tourism Department director, Soy Kinal, claimed the new pier would make it more convenient for cruise ships and ferries to berth and that might draw more foreign tourists to Cambodia from neighbouring Thailand and Vietnam.
“Kampot is close to the Gulf of Thailand and Phu Quc Island so we can attract people from tourism islands of Thailand and Vietnam,” he said.
The Government-Private Sector Working Group on Tourism co-chair, Ho Vandy, told the local media that the pier would make Cambodia a more attractive destination in the Southeast Asia region.
“Foreign tourists who have tough schedules will be able to include Cambodia in their itineraries as travelling time will be shorter,” he said.
He did not explain how building a pier would shorten travel distances. Like many projects ADB funds the delivery of tourists to the site is more difficult than the actual funding or building of the infrastructure.
The pier is just one prospective project under the ADB’s Greater Mekong Subregion Tourism Infrastructure for Inclusive Growth Project. The project is set to be considered by the ADB’s board on 24 November.
Kampot is a small town in southeast Cambodia and capital of the province with same name. It is a gateway to Bokor National Park, the old French hill station at 1,080-metre which can be visited as a day trip from Kampot or Sihanoukville.
The city is a quiet riverside town just a few kilometres from the Gulf of Thailand. Kampot is well known for its famous black pepper, which is widely available in Cambodia. The town is also famous for its Kampot fish sauce and durian, not exactly the features that will draw thousands of tourists.

Start up airlines eye China

A new airline, Apsara International Air, gained approval from Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation to fly domestic routes.
The local news channels reported that SSCA granted an Airline Operations Certificate (AOC) to Apsara International Air, 15 September.
The airline partly owned by Chinese and Cambodian investors received the green light after a filing its original application over a year ago.
The airline CEO, Zhang Xiao Peng, was quoted as saying that AIA will initially commence domestic flights using an Airbus A320 between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
“We will start domestic flights, this month. Beginning next year we will launch flights from Cambodia to China,” he said.
“In 2016 and 2017 we will expand to Japan and South Korea and by the year 2019, we estimate we will have up to 50 aircraft.”
According to the SSCA, two more airlines — Bassaka Air and Bayon Airlines—are due to gain approval by this December.
Bassaka Air, is a partnership with a travel agency, China International Travel Services and local investors. It aims to fly from Phnom Penh to China using Airbus A320s this December.
Meanwhile, Cambodia Bayon Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cambodian-owned Bayon Holdings, is now joint venturing with Aviation Industry Corporation of China that has taken an undisclosed stake in the airline.
Like Apsara, Bayon plans domestic flights first with two Xian Aircraft Industry Company’s MA60 aircraft, but it will also link Cambodia to Chinese cities in the future.
The SSCA undersecretary, Chea Aun, said to maintain safety standards were scrutinised carefully before an AOC was granted.

Philippine Airlines To Launch A Cambodian Carrier
Philippine Airlines says it will still pursue plans to
launch a Cambodian carrier with local partner, Royal Group, despite lengthy
delays, fears of political unrest and aviation industry skepticism over the
viability of another entrant into the small domestic market.
The Philippine news site ABS-CBN reported Philippine
Airlines (PAL) denied, last week, that it was shelving a joint venture deal
with Royal Group of Cambodia to form Cambodia Airlines.
“We wish to clarify that on-going preparations for the
completion of the contemplated joint venture agreement between Philippine
Airlines, Inc. and Inter Logistics (Cambodia) Co Ltd relating to Cambodia
Airlines Co Ltd are currently being conducted,” PAL said in a disclosure to the
stock exchange.
“As such, it is not true that the joint venture project has
been ‘shelved’,” it added.
PAL issued the clarification after Business Mirror quoted
the Center for Asia-Pacific Aviation (CAPA) as saying “PAL’s decision to shelve
and question the viability of its Cambodian joint-venture project is the right
move.”
“The group should focus on the Philippine market, where it
has opportunities, but challenges including stiff competition from low-cost
carriers. It should avoid the temptation of revisiting the Cambodian project or
pursuing any other potential overseas joint venture,” the CAPA said.
The centre is a highly reliable and respected source of
independent news and analysis on the region’s aviation.
Cambodia Airlines, which aims to become the country’s
second full-service carrier after Cambodia Angkor Air, was initially supposed
to launch services in mid-2013 with a US$1 million investment from PAL. But
after missing closing dates in June and October, the venture has yet to be finalized.

Cambodia
plans to establish its first civil aviation school to help improve the
country’s aviation industry using a grant from South Korea.
According to Xinhua online media, Cambodia plans to set up the first
ever Civil Aviation Training Centre with South Korean assistance to train more
people in aviation related skills.
The Council of Ministers’ Press Unit deputy director, Ek
Tha, was quoted as saying: “South Korea
agreed to provide US$10.1 million in a grant to Cambodia for the project.”
It has taken more than a year to get to the announcement
stage after Cambodia and South Korea
signed off on an agreement detailing the project.
Most of the delays reaching an accord were understood to be
related to the need to have checks and balances in place to ensure transparency
in the grant’s accounting.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Sok An
and Baek Sook Hee, head of the Korean International Cooperation Agency in Cambodia,
signed the project agreement on earlier this month, he said.
The deputy director cited: “The project is very crucial
because Cambodia
needs to acquire knowledge and technology necessary to improve its aviation
industry.”
The construction of the centre will start in the second half
of 2014 in the eastern compound of the Phnom Penh International
Airport on a plot of
8,000 square metres, he said.
The construction will be completed in a year with necessary
facilities for training airline staff, he said.
In addition, South
Korea will send experts and instructors to
train Cambodian airline crew at the centre until 2017.
The local media also quoted the State Secretariat of Civil
Aviation undersecretary, Say Sokhan, as saying: “Once the facility is complete,
Korean experts will train Cambodians to become pilots, air traffic controllers,
flight attendants and airport security guards.”
“There are only about 20 Cambodian pilots right now…and they
were all trained in the Soviet Union,” he
said, adding that SSCA officials are currently required to travel oversees for
training.
Cambodia
received 4.3 million air passengers in 2012, up 14.7% year-on-year, according
to the Cambodia Airports’ data.

ADB bumps up aid to Cambodia
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday announced a US$525 million aid plan for Cambodia over the next three years to promote the country’s economic growth.
The ADB said the money would be used to fund projects to promote rice production and exports, improve transport links and irrigation systems, and develop towns along economic “corridors” connecting Southeast Asia.
Although the report did not mention tourism, ADB has been funded project to support tourism development, mainly roads and other infrastructure to assist the growth of sustainable tourism as part of its poverty elimination programmes.
The plan aims to boost Cambodia’s economy and make it “more resilient to external shocks,” said ADB economist Peter Brimble.
Cambodia’s economy is expected to grow by 6.4% this year, according to the Manila-based ADB.
Written off as a failed state after the devastating 1975 to 1979 Khmer Rouge regime and several decades of civil war, the Southeast Asian nation has used garment exports and tourism to help improve its economy.
But it remains one of the world’s poorest countries, with around a third of its 14 million people living on less than a dollar a day.

Cambodia plans river festival
![]() |
From Threeland Travel Blog's January |
Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism plans to organise an annual river festival along the Mekong and Tonle Sap to attract tourists and raise awareness for environmental protection.
Phnom Penh Post quoted Minister of Tourism Thong Khon, last Friday saying: “The concept of a River festival… will strengthen our range of tourism services,” the minister said.
The first river festival will take place this year in Kratie province, the home of the Mekong’s freshwater dolphins, to support nearby eco-tourism sites and create awareness and help to save the endangered species.
However, the exact date of the festival has not been decided and preparations are still in an early stage.
Mekong Heritage owner, Som Sun, commented that the ministry’s initiative was welcomed by the private sector, but it should also include measures to strengthen the quality of tourism.
The model for the new festival will be the Sea Festival that was held in late 2011 in Preah Sihanouk province.
However, according to Thong Khon the river festival will be on a smaller scale initially.

More direct flights from Philippines to Cambodia
| ||
From Threeland Travel's Blog - December 2012 |
The Philippine ambassador in Cambodia is confident there will be more direct flights between the two Asian countries, apart from the current Manila-Siem Reap route, which is six hours away by land from this capital.
Ambassador Noe Wong expressed optimism there will be another memorandum of agreement, paving the way for Cebu Pacific’s thrice a week Manila-Siem Reap direct flight.
“We just hope that direct flight from Manila to Siem Reap will sooner or later establish another direct flight, maybe from Manila to Phnom Penh because there are more Filipinos here in Phnom Penh than in Siem Reap,” he said.
The Gokongwei-owned airline started its maiden direct flight to Siem Reap last April 19, increasing tourism and trade in both countries.
Wong said this was a result of the joint commission for bilateral cooperation (JCBC) where the Philippines and Cambodia are members, and where the “special air services agreement” was reached.

Top 5 must-do things in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor temple complex, wherein its centuries-old architecture and art give meaning to Cambodia's tourism campaign "Kingdom of Wonder." Walking the grounds of the temple ruins amid the dense forests and fields will make you feel like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft. But there’s more to Siem Reap than just the temples. Here are some of the essential Siem Reap experiences:
| ||
From Threeland Travel's Blog - September 2012 |
No trip to Siem Reap would be complete without seeing the ancient stone city of Angkor. There are hundreds of temples, each with impressive architecture and art. Some temples are better-restored than others, but each has a unique charm.
The most famous of the temples is Angkor Wat. Built in the 12th century, Angkor Wat was built as a temple for the Hindu god Vishnu.
Visit the Angkor Wat at sunrise. The majestic spires are bathed in early morning glow making it a very memorable sight. Going in the early morning is also a good idea to avoid the heavy crowds, especially during the weekend. For a unique experience, go on a balloon ride for an aerial view of the Angkor complex.
Other Angkor temples are no less impressive than the Angkor Wat. In Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple stands in the center of the walled city. It is known as a complex of "face towers," or towers with huge stone faces of Buddha. Ta Prohm, a temple-monastery built in the late 12th to 13th century, is perhaps best known as the location for the "Tomb Raider" movie. There are huge trees growing on top of the temple ruins, giving it an eerie but romantic atmosphere.

Banteay Srei, which means Citadel of Women, has a unique beauty that lives up to its reputation as "Jewel of Khmer Art." The buildings, which were built in the second half of the 10th century are made of red sandstone and decorated with intricate wall carvings.
Your inner Indiana Jones will be unleashed when you go to Beng Melea, located about an hour and a half's drive from downtown Siem Reap. Built in the middle of the 12th century, Beng Melea is still largely unrestored with collapsed towers and galleries. You might find yourself crawling and climbing up large chunks of stone. It can be quite exhausting, but worth the experience.
Going 'amok'
Cambodia's national dish, fish amok (fish curry), is a must try. Usually it is served in banana leaf, but the version we tried was served in a coconut. The curry is lightly spiced but flavorful, and perfect with steamed rice.
Another must try dish is Khmer curry. The red curry might give the impression it is spicy, but it is surprisingly not since the red chili is tempered by the coconut cream.
Cambodian noodle dishes are also quite tasty. Mee ketang is a Cantonese-style noodle dish with wide rice noodles, vegetables, mushrooms in oyster sauce.
Lok lak, stir-fried marinated beef served with a fried egg on a bed of lettuce and tomatoes, was a bit disappointing. The beef wasn't tender and dipping it in a sauce of black pepper, salt and lime juice didn't help. Depending on the restaurant, it can be served with French fries or rice.
Cambodian dish Lok Lak

From Threeland Travel's Blog - September 2012 |
The green mango salad, which has carrots, mango, onion and basil in fish sauce, was a refreshing surprise. The fresh spring rolls, with its raw vegetables, thicker rice paper and not-so-sweet peanut sauce, was bland. Fried spring rolls, with cabbage, carrots and taro, are a much better choice.
Freshly cooked sticky rice with a slice of jackfruit wrapped in banana leaves may remind Filipinos of "suman", but it still has a unique Cambodian flavor.
If you want to try the most Cambodian dishes in one sitting, head to Koulen II restaurant which offers a buffet with Apsara traditional dance show only for $10. If you want to learn how to make Khmer dishes, there are cooking classes offered at Temple, along Pub Street.
Search for Cambodian souvenirs
Tourists can get a feel for a traditional Cambodian market at the Phasar Chas (Old Market). But after a day at the temples, most tourists head to the night market. There are several night markets in Siem Reap, but don't worry about getting lost since there are big flashing signs of "Night Market" everywhere.
The night market offers a wide range of souvenirs, such as T-shirts, keychains, ref magnets, silk scarves, silver accessories and wood carvings. Haggling is a must!
For high quality products, go to Artisans d' Angkor which showcases silk fabrics, stone and wood carvings, silver plating and lacquer items. A social business, Artisans Angkor has helped revive Khmer arts and crafts, as it established workshops that educates and trains young, disadvantaged Cambodians.
The Cambodia Landmine Museum is a reminder of the horrors that landmines have caused in the country. In fact, if you look closely, some of the temples have signs that say the area has been cleared of landmines.
Aki Ra, a former Khmer Rouge child soldier, is at the forefront of de-mining efforts, having established the museum and the NGO Cambodian Self-Help Demining. The museum, a 30-minute tuk tuk ride from downtown Siem Reap, gives visitors a closer look of how landmines work, the destruction it inflicted and what they can do to help rid the world of landmines.
It's a sobering look at Cambodia's past, and gives visitors a sense of just how much suffering Cambodians went through. Visitors can donate to the Museum Relief Center, a shelter for some Cambodian children who were injured or orphaned due to landmines.
Relaxing Khmer-style
After a long day of trekking at the temples and shopping, relax by getting a Khmer massage. There are several places offering massage and reflexology treatments along Pub Street and even in the night market.
There's also several "fish foot massage" stalls, where fish nibble at the dead skin on your feet. It may feel ticklish at first, but you'd be surprised at how clean your feet look after. A 30-minute fish foot massage costs just $3 with a can of Angkor or Cambodia beer.

Kampung Phluk – An exclusive world
![]() |
From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012 |
Whilst visiting Angkor Wat, visitors cannot skip through Kampung Phluk because of its unique on-water world. Kampung Phluk is practically located at the edge of the Tonle Sap Lake and completely surrounded by mangrove forests, where every year the water level rises and falls depending on the season.
Tourists will absolutely be awestruck when it comes to the site of sequential houses constructed on bamboo stilts, sitting 10 meters above the water. The atmosphere is absorbed in a mixture of typical salty smell, coming from fish, crocodile and pig farms nearby. The village has all the cultural and social sites for its residents - a temple, a stupa to keep the ashes of the departed, a monastery, and schools. There is no western hospital, and the people still prefer their traditional medicine for minor illnesses.
During the wet season, the lake overflows and floods the area surrounding it. That is the main reason why local houses follow the special structure. The Cambodian villagers adapt to the yearly change by adjusting the height of their houses depending on the water level.
During the dry season, the water level falls so drastically that visitor can actually walk on land. The villagers often take advantage of the available dry space to dry their shrimp. After the shrimp are dried, they are seasoned and later packaged to be sold.
As the boat slowly moves further into the village, tourists will see the peaceful Cambodian on-water life. People are busy washing clothes, trading, cleaning newly caught fish, while some are relaxing in the house safe from the hot sun. At last, after spending some time in the village, do not leave Kampung Phluk without taking a look at the great Tonle Sap Lake, which is just a few minutes boat ride away.
Kampong Khleang – An unspoiled river land

From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012 |
Kampong Khleang is located on the northern lake-edge about 55 km east of Siem Reap town, more remote and less tourist than Kampong Pluk. Visitors to Kampong Khleang during the dry season are universally awestruck by the forest of stilted houses rising up to 10 meters in the air. In wet season the waters rise up to one or two meters of the buildings. Like Kompong Pluk, Kompong Khleang is a permanent community within the flood plain of the Lake, with an economy based in fishing and surrounded by flooded forest. But Kompong Khleang is significantly larger with nearly 10 times the population of Kompong Pluk, making it the largest community on the Lake.
The area can be reached by charter boat from the Chong Khneas dock takes about two and a half hours or by a combination of road to Domdek on Route 6 takes one and a half hour reach to dock and then meet a boatman drive another one hour to the village, the best method depending on the time of year. During the dry season, boats cannot get all of the way to the main villages.
Chong Kneas – A well-constructed floating village

From Threeland Travel's Blog - July 2012 |
Chong Kneas is a floating village at the edge of the Tonle Sap Lake that is more popular than Kampung Phluk and Kampong Khleang. It is one of the major attractions in Siem Reap, just about 20 – 30 minutes from the province’s center. The route to this village is lined with attractive paddy fields, stilted houses and the Phnom Krom hill – which has an ancient temple at the top. As entering the village, the first thing that impresses visitors will be rows of tourist boats docked.
There is a seemingly-most famous Cambodian school in this village. That students go to school on boat makes hilarious scenery. The school even has a separate floating basketball court and definitely, visitors cannot imagine how it was able to be built. The protective rails on the sides of the court restrict the ball and players inside.
Besides, do not miss out on the catfish farm – probably the ‘highlight’ of the Chong Kneas visit. Visitors have the chance to feed them. There is also a crocodile farm with about ten crocodile right next to the fish farm. A fantastic view of the Tonle Sap Lake and the floating village can be seen from the second or third storey of the farm.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises announced three new ships in Asia for 2013. In partnership with Pandaw in Vietnam and Cambodia along the Mekong River, and Century River Cruises in China along the Yangtze River, Uniworld will offer their clients the best cruising experiences these regions have to offer.
In January 2012, Uniworld
launched the River Saigon along the Mekong, and due to the increasing
popularity of Vietnam and Cambodia, they will launch another new ship, River
Orchid, in this region in 2013. These ships are handcrafted in French colonial
style to furnish their guests with a more authentic type of cruising experience
along the Mekong. The intimate scale of the ships, which boast just 30 staterooms
and carry no more than 60 guests, assures more personalized service. “The
demand for Vietnam and Cambodia has exceeded our expectations. We quickly sold
out all of our departures in 2012, and so it made sense for us to add an
additional ship along the Mekong,” states Guy Young, President of Uniworld
Boutique River Cruises.
For those wishing to travel to
China, they’ll be treated to a five-star luxury experience onboard the new
Century Legend or Century Paragon. The Century Paragon and Legend will offer Uniworld
guests an unmatched level of comfort, luxury, and relaxation never before
experienced on the Yangtze. The many five-star features these vessels will
offer include an exclusive executive deck and a huge indoor pool/spa area.
While cruising on either of these new ships in China, guests will stay in
Uniworld Signature Suites, and will be treated to a host of exclusive VIP
benefits available only to them.
Onshore Uniworld guests can
expect the same five-star experience. Uniworld has arranged for their guests to
stay in superior, centrally located five-star hotels throughout Asia all, of
which offer luxurious accommodations, modern-day comforts, and impeccable
hospitality.
“Uniworld
wants to continue to offer our clients a well diversified portfolio of product
offerings throughout the world, and we want to deliver to our guests the very
best accommodations and amenities these regions have to offer,” adds
Young. “We have also included many
exclusive VIP benefits that are only available to our guests,” furthers Young.
With this
new ship launching in Indochina, the regional tourism will be boosted sharply.
